Speaking of elections...

..I went to check out the League of Women Voter's Smartvoter page to see what will be on the ballot this November. Not much, in my district anyway. Just a county board of education and College of the Redwoods Trustee seats. Boy, sounds exciting.

I see Jake Pickering is running for the Board of Education seat. I wonder if he'll get shellacked like he did last time he ran for...what was it... the water district seat?

I notice, once again, none of the candidates running have added any of their campaign info to the Smartvoter site. I never cease to be amazed that candidates don't take advantage of that free service the League of Women Voters offers.

People have thier own websites now.

Except I've heard from candidates that bemoan the fact they don't know how to create, or can't afford a web site, and still don't take advantage of the Smartvoter site.

That is how they show their age and irrelevance.

Charles Olliver Smart Voter -- Ollivier website
Steve Morris Smart Voter -- Morris website

I read them. I have to say I have known Charles for years and the environment or recreational use of the Bay is not even close to a priority for him. His handler Mike Harvey is just trying to confuse voters. It is very cynical.

I have known Charles for years
but obviously not very well.

At 12:42 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

...well enough to know.

Ollivier's a screamer and shouter, and after 16 years his rail/harbor vision is a pipedream, mired in lawsuits and bleeding consulting fees. At a labor temple meeting, Ollivier accosted and yelled at Carlos Quilez, who's not even running against him. Carlos questioned whether the public has received fair value for the $48M spent by the Harbor District in the last 10 years.

on the other hand, he's a longshoreman who cares passionately about the bay, and the people who work the bay, a tireless supporter of labor who has won the respect and endorsement of most of the labor groups, the congressman, the assemblywoman, the supervisors, the fishermen, the oyster farmers who has worked for many years on the development of the new bay plan, the dredging of the harbor and the hiring of a port director with world wide ties and a plan to improve things in humboldt.
IMHO

What are you trying to say there 2:44, that he's human with good qualities and bad?

At 3:20 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ask the congressman and the assemblywoman directly if they really believe or support Ollivier's fantasy agenda of an international container port and they will tell you they don't. They just owe him for past endorsements that he gave them. We all know how it works.

At 3:23 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Whoa, the District hired a port director that worked three years at his last job before he was fired. At least he has “connections”.

At 4:03 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Don't forget the bar pilots. For $140,000 a year plus benefits I would endorse him too.

At 4:28 PM, Blogger Rose said...

I'd like to hear Congressman Thompson and Assemblywoman Patty Berg say "Yeah, my endorsement means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. You all know how it works"

I'll make a note of that.

At 4:37 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They do mean something. It is loyalty to those that have supported you in the past.

At 5:03 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anyone ever actually see Thompson, Berg, or Geist speaking out in support of Ollivier? Or just getting pictures taken together for local media? No way, their endorsements are just backslapping. They all run for the door when Ollivier approaches.

Yep, Ollivier is a "good guy". But he's not the "right guy" to craft a viable plan to knit back the economic collapse of the port. Put him on the dock where he knows what he's doing, not in the boardroom.

"Whoa, the District hired a port director that worked three years at his last job before he was fired. At least he has “connections”."

The same guy that said that without the rail there is no port.

Remeber too that Arkley is looking for port business. He bought the Simpson site and has told the NCRA he wants shipping.

At 8:24 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The same guy who also told the NCJ that even with a rail the port is unlikely.

Remember too that ports and rails are not Arkley's business and just because he wants does not mean he gets.

From the comments here, this is obviously going to turn into an extremely negative race, all from one side. Guess who must be involved.

At 6:26 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's an election. Some valid criticism of an incumbent’s record is to be expected. Its not always a conspiracy.

At 9:42 PM, Blogger Rose said...

No, not always, But Higgins just changed his website over from his failed Supervisor bid, and will have no choice but to go negative. With Salzman and "heraldo" pushing for him, look for "Local Solutions" somewhere in the mix.

At 9:38 AM, Blogger mresquan said...

Rose,I've known Pat for a few years now,and he will not"go negative",and I understand that Local Solutions is not involved in his race.
Look past your differences with Pat,and you'll see that he has a positive vision for the harbor, and has good, implementable ideas. The election is less than a month away and I don't see the negativity you're referring to yet,and I don't see it coming.

At 2:08 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Diito. Try as you may Rose... you won't find any hint of Salzman in that campaign.

Friends :

Pat Higgins press conference has been moved to Tuesday 12:15 PM...

For those who don't know aeb is Salzman's so called "Alliance for oh-so-Eth-i-cal Business" - only one of the "aliases" he emails as.

At 3:04 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If you're looking for "unholy" associations, how come Ollivier's campaign manager is Mike Harvey?

Pat worst fault for Rose is that he's a loyal Democrat. Doesn't get any worse than that for her. In reality, as a businessman, Pat's on the fiscally conservative side. Non-ideological Republicans like that.

At 6:21 PM, Blogger Rose said...

Pat's worst fault is that his given reason for running against Jill Geist was that he didn't like that she didn't do what she was 'supposed to' way back when Gallegos/Stoen first brought Ken Miller's lawsuit before the Board asking them to foot the bill for a high priced out of the area attorney. She said NO. And Higgins doesn't get that time has proven her right. The case was tossed out before even going to court because it was an agenda driven piece of shit.

My disrespect for Pat Higgins has nothing to do with his party affiliation. In general, party affiliation has nothing to do with who I like or dislike, or who I vote for.

I have seen nothing from Higgins yet that shows me that he could be independent enough to, like Geist, vote against the Salzman agenda. And that is a deep concern to me.

At 6:58 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

huh? If Pat is anything it is independent.

At 9:43 PM, Blogger Rose said...

Perhaps "beholden" is a better word.

At 10:43 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Again, If you know Pat he is not one to be "beholden". What exactly could he have done to show you that he could be independent?

Fred, you're just too smug for your own good. What's your beef with Jake Pickering? Not right-wing enough for you? I know Jake and he's a great guy and a very hard worker. You might be surprised, Fred, but I think Jake Pickering will be elected this time after his October 1st article in the Times-Standard called "Money Isn't Everything, Mr. Arkley." Jake kicked Arkley's arrogant ass for the entire county to see and people loved it! Jake Pickering should be on the Board of Education. Jake is not only extremely intelligent, he's also one of the best progressive radio people I've ever heard. Jake's a real Democrat, unlike Charles O. Stick to subjects you understand, Fred. Not too many of those though.

At 7:48 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

LOL. Pickering is running against Sharon Omey. Omey is a right-wing, anti-choice Republican who needs to be removed from the Board of Education. Sharon & her husband Jon Omey have donated thousands of dollars to theocratic, anti-choice, anti-women, anti-gay causes. If Fred is really a libertarian, he'll vote for a proven civil libertarian like Jake Pickering. If Fred is really just a right-wing Republican at heart, then he'll probably vote for Omey.

At 8:02 AM, Blogger Fred Mangels said...

"Omey is a right-wing, anti-choice Republican".

One's political affiliation shouldn't have anything to do with a non- partisan position. Unless, of course, you can make a connection between that political affiliation and the issues involved in the position the candidates are seeking.

Since you didn't address any specific issues regarding education, I'll assume you have none.

"vote for a proven civil libertarian like Jake Pickering...".

I might have forgotten something, but I've seen no evidence that Jake Pickering is a libertarian, civil or otherwise.

At 10:24 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I've seen no evidence that Fred Mangels is a libertarian, big L or small L. Unless you consider Fred's stated tolerance for pedophilia a "libertarian" position. Fred, you need serious help. Medication most likely. I wouldn't let Fred Mangels within 50 yards of any children, ever. Fred you are a fucking disgrace to the human race. Now that I know Fred Mangels is voting against Jake Pickering, I'll be voting for Jake Pickering! Thanks Fred, you made up my mind for me.

At 11:40 AM, Blogger Rose said...

Pickering's off his meds today, Fred, posting comments all over the place. :)

At 1:04 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Rose? Aren't you the pyscho totally obsessed with Richard Salzman? Go take your meds, Rose. Better yet, Rose, go get a life. You are almost as crazy as Fred Mangels.

At 4:49 PM, Blogger Rose said...

See, we've won him over, Fred.

I can't believe that no one posts anything at the smartvoter.com site. I mean, that's THE resource. Even if you do have a website (which none of the candidates in my district have) you should still link it from the League of Woman Voter's page. For the love of your constituents!

Any way, I finally found a site with information about the candidates for Humboldt County Board of Education Trustee Area Three Governing Board Member. I couldn't find any more information online.

There is also a site for the Redwoods Community College District Trustee Area Four Governing Board Member. It was better than nothing.
