A New Shady Operator In Town?

Just noticed this article in the Arcata Eye about the North Country Fair, held in Arcata a couple weeks ago. I've never been to that event myself.

Anyone know this Washington Vera fellow? He's the guy that bought the North Country Fair from the old owner. The Arcata Eye makes it sound like he's someone that we might want to keep an eye on. Hard to say whether he's just not good at what he does, or he's trying to scam people.

From what I read in the Eye article, it looks like he's definitely trying to scam people.

Well, sometimes people try to do things that are just beyond their abilities. The thing with using the CCC volunteers for security and then billing the city for it doesn't sound too good.

But, maybe there's more to the story.

Remember the Ox- Bow Incident.

The North Country Fair is experiencing a drain of involvement due to Earthdance being the same weekend. Many of the same old people who helped keep the energy up for the fair no longer attend or volunteer.

Indeed! You sure can't believe everything you read in the papers!

The North Coast Journal has a story too, but it's short on detail and long on fluff. Scooped by the Eye. Woof.

He's a friend of Arkley.

Or maybe that's Salzman's buddy.

I heard on good authority that he's the secret love child of Debi August and Roger Rodoni.

Are there any precedents in the historical Stalin-Trotsky conflict to the current Arkley-Salzman conflict? Just asking.

The eureka reporter is not a newspaper.
It is pure propaganda from the most criminal administration in the history of the world.

For example:

Remember That Company That Planted Good News In Iraq? So Does The Government, Who Hired Them Again

Good work is rewarded! The Lincoln Group, which you may know better as the PR firm that paid Iraqi newspapers to write positive articles about the U.S. military, has just been awarded a two-year, $6.2-million dollar contract to "monitor a number of English and Arabic news outlets and to produce public-relations products like talking points or speeches for American forces in Iraq, officials said Tuesday." From the AP:

The idea, according to contract documents, is to use the information to "build support" in Iraqi, Arab, international and American audiences for what the military describes as its goals in Iraq, such as destroying the insurgency and helping Iraqis build a democracy.

Washington Vera has a history of scamming bands, sound technicians and club owners for the past ten years. His nick name is Weasleton Vera. Just ask around the entertainment industry in Eureka/Arcata and you will find countless people who do not have kind words for him. When you look up the word shyster in the dictionary....Washington Vera's photo is next to it. There is a reason both the Eye and The Journal covered this story. He has a horrible reputation among local musicians.

Bullshit, Rover.

The Northcoast Journal article by Bob Doran is actually much better than the Eye article. It has much more detail, with more interviews of people involved, giving the reader much more of the inside story. There is no "fluff" at all.

Kudos to Bob on a well-written, very informative article. This Washington Vera guy sounds like a greedy, lieing sleazebag. I hope the people of Arcata can take back the ownership of the North Country Fair from this con artist before next year.

Perhaps Washington Vera isn't as greedy as would appear from the Eye and Journal articles. Maybe he was trying to make money on the Fair in order to give more to charity. Here's an excerpt from a Eureka Reporter article:

The decision to launch the “Share the Bounty Canned Food Drive” goes back to Vera’s multiple-year involvement as a volunteer with Food For People, he said.

“This year I was in a position to really make an impact, to really fill up barrels and barrels of food,” Vera said. “Hopefully we’ll make an impact.”

Food For People Fund Development Director Jennifer Rishel said that her nonprofit organization has had a long association with Vera.

“He delivers groceries to homebound disabled adults and so he’s supportive of Food For People and the work that we do in the community, and he’s tried to help us out in other areas,” Rishel said.

Hello friends. We would like to state the obvious, that nobody is all bad.

That aside, we want you to know that the Same Old People, previously just a reference to North Country Fair organizers, is now an official organization composed of founders and former directors of the Fair and some concerned crafters & other vendors.

Rest assured, the Fair will be back in our hands soon. Thanks to all in the community for their support, and apologies to any and all that were let down, harmed, or otherwise disappointed in the 2006 NCF.

If you would like to discuss this further, check out:
