Hislop's Supporters

Did anyone attend Mike Hislop's official announcement for his candidacy in the Sheriff's race yesterday? The Times- Standard story mentions "several dozen supporters", but I'm wondering if there were really several dozen people there?

The only picture shown is that of Hislop and Gallegos. Don't the media usually take pictures of the candidate with a bunch of supporters behind him like they did with Virginia Bass? I'm dying to know if there are any names I know amongst his supporters. Anybody know?

I also wonder why he used the Best Western for his announcement instead of the courthouse as so many other candidates do?

Fred: the answer is simple. He didn't have enough people to hold an open event. Now I don't actually think doing it on the courthouse steps is all that good (in fact it is sort of dorky), but if you are going to announce, at least have supporters there if you have them.

Evidently, Hislop doesn't have much support from anywhere, but who would support a guy who was a lousy sgt and an even worse DA investigator. This is the guy that thought he should have his own swat team, AK47's, code enforcement raids etc.. I wouldn't vote for him and I was in law enforcement for years.

I know. I feel the same way, but the story referred to "several dozen" supporters. I take several to be the same as x7. So, the writer was suggesting there were 70, maybe 80ish, supporters present.

I'm sure more than just Gallegos showed up, but how many and who were they? Unless the writer made up the figure or included that reference at Hislop's request.

Does Hislop have a campaign mananger?

Fred, I have attended many insurance meetings at the Best Western, as well as the Red Lion. Both places have facilities for meetings.

I figured they have meeting rooms. Just seemed strange to me they didn't try and do it in a more public place. And notice, in the picture provided, it was taken outside. Only Gallegos and Hislop in the picture with one person in the background. Strange.

I wouldn't make too much about not seeing people in the newspaper photo. It might have been taking outside before or after the announcement.

BTW, I don't know anything about either of the two candidates, so I don't have an opinion. I did briefly teach music classes to a couple of Mike Downey's kids about 12 years ago, when I was teaching music in Fortuna. They were nice kids and so was their mom, Annette. She is a local FNP and works in Fortuna.

The Times Standard is probably wrong about how many people actually attended. As you may have noticed, they have gotten many many things wrong in the past.

There were less than 2 dozen which is more votes than this domestic bully will garner. This boob is even less attractive than gags.

Oh, I'm sure he'll get more than a couple dozen votes. More likely his numbers will be in the thousands, although my guess is he'll still lose by a landslide.

I'm just wondering where his main support- if he really ends up with any- will come from?

At this point I'm guessing his main body of support will come from a handful of fringe- type Gallegos supporters. There doesn't seem to be a significant left vs right issue as there might be with other county positions. At least not yet.

Hislop running is a great X-mas present for Downey.

Hate to burst your bubble, but the Times Standard was conservative in guessing at numbers, but you go ahead and have fun with it. When the citizens of Humboldt County are made fully aware of Mike Hislops background, education, and people skills, your boy Downey looks pretty slim. One of the main things we all need to be aware of is Hislops ability to bring in outside money to help us in these obviously serious times. His TRACK record in this area is exemplary. Downey will give you more of the old business as usual and not look outside the box. Hope you come to your senses!

I doubt it. Anon 8:02 was there and said there were less than 2 dozen.
