Fred's Humboldt Blog
I'm a Libertarian living in Humboldt County, CA. I've lived here in Eureka since 1973 and joined the Libertarian Party in 1992. This blog will mostly focus on local political issues, but I may stray into state and national issues as well, when I can't help myself. What's going on here? The Times-Standard reports on the failure to gather signatures on Feb. 18 but the Committee for the measure threw in the towel with an official letter of withdrawal to the City Clerk on Feb. 4. It takes two weeks for the public to be informed?? Usually it's reported in two hours!
I guess it depends on who's issue it it.
Casual, don't you think they're called the Times-Slandard for a reason? They're used to being old people's only daily source of news every day for the last 100+ years. For them, its an easy cruise. So much to the point that they don't bother to be accountable to any standards of quality. Oh, and one more thing, SWEET SWEET VICTORY!
One thing I'm wondering is it there was a problem with more than just logistics in gathering the signatures. I wouldn't think it would be that hard, relatively speaking, to get 4000 signatures. After all, you just have to get registered Eureka voters to sign and you're in Eureka.
Wonder if some people wouldn't sign it?
Fred, it probably failed because too many people didn't want to sign it. Larry and Linda just can't deal with the rejection.
I wonder about that. It would seem to me a lot of Eureka voters, just like voters everywhere else, don't pay a lot of attention to issues. Well, maybe around election time, but they wouldn't be thinking about it now, especially this True Ward thing.
I would think if you approached a lot of Eureka people right now and asked them if they would sign a petition for "better representation of the wards...", a number of people might sign without thinking much of it.
They might not vote for it come the election, but I would think it wouldn't bother them to sign the petition to get it on the ballot.
