Those "Heroic" Drone Pilots

Glenn Greenwald has another great piece up at Salon magazine taking a look at efforts to award medals to drone pilots who often work hundreds or thousands of miles from the battlefield.

More nice work by Greenwald. I hadn't read much from him until recently but I'm becoming a fast fan. Link was courtesy of Antiwar.com.

You are under the mistaken impression that all military service medals are awarded for bravery / heroism. Frankly, you're being very insulting to our service members.

Not quite. I got all kinds of awards for one thing or another not combat related.

And you're obviously one of the military cultists that adore all military and war.

So what? Would you rather they call it an "employe of the month" award? That make it all better? Give their CO an award too for saving so many troops from getting obliterated on the front lines by not having to be there at all.

This article, published in Feb. by Esquire magazine, was a good take on the over-use of the word 'hero' these days:

I'm with Fred on this one. And don't fuck with him, Mr. brave Anonymous patriot. He served, and even if he hadn't, he's entitled to an opinion.
