Colorado: Legal Pot Catching Up With Illegal?

Reason magazine takes a look at the competition between legal and black market pot dealers in Colorado. Their conclusion seems to be that legal dealers are becoming so much more efficient and cost effective, that they'll soon be able to compete with the still existing black market.

I'm skeptical. I still feel government (and people in general) won't be able to resist taxing marijuana as high as they can, just as they do with tobacco, alcohol and pretty much everything else. I would think the black market will always be able to beat that, never mind being able to grow your own.

You make a good point, Fred. I hadn't thought of that-- too much taxation making it inequitable. That's a point to consider that's quite possible. I agree. To a onerous taxable point.

But, come to think of it, we don't see too much of a black market moonshining scene happening, either. Some perhaps, but not anything to take notice of.

Any thoughts?

I've thought about the moonshining thing with beer and such. I've heard some of that still goes on.

The thing with alcohol vs pot is it's probably easier to grow a sizable stash of pot than it is to brew a sizable amount of beer or other liquor, depending on how much one drinks, of course.

But, as they keep increasing taxes on beer, I've thought off and on about trying to make my own. I just think it would take a large amount of time, effort and resources to make as much as I drink.

If someone was making beer on the sly- a bootlegger if you will- I'd be more than willing to consider buying from him.

As an aside, when I first moved up here and was living at the House of Squires out on Pidgeon Pt. Road, a bunch of the people living there decided to try brewing up a bunch of beer. They mixed it up in a garbage can and after a certain amount of time put it in a bunch of old beer bottles.

They set them in the crawl space under the main apartment building to let them do their thing. One by one the bottles exploded until there was none left. Took something like 5 days for them all to blow up. Not sure what they did wrong.

Comparted to pot, I meant. I could probably grow a year's supply of pot fairly easily in my back yard. I've grown pot plants before, although none to maturity. It seemed fairly easy. In fact, the biggest plant I grew was just after I moved up here and was living at the House of Squires.

I let it grow to probably a bit over 2 feet before I got paranoid about getting busted. I dried it up and smoked it. Yes, it got me stoned.
