Chief Mills' Blogging on the Homeless Plan
I thought Eureka Police Chief Mills did a nice job on his view of homeless issues over at his blog. I notice the Humboldt Chapter of the ACLU thought it was pretty nice, too, according to a Facebook feed I got from them.
Again, I appreciate their efforts, but I'm not sure how much better the situation will be even if their plans do come to fruition. As Chief Mills points out, "Most homeless want to be housed…although often times on their terms.". That's the impression I got from that recent Times- Standard article.
I don't think we should expect to see a whole bunch of newly housed, employed and responsible people even in a best case scenario.

When a person is forced into giving up their pets, smokes, beliefs, or any other personal choice, in order to have a roof over their head, I don't blame them. Getting clean from the drugs they've used in order to cope with the harshness of homelessness caused by misfortune & ordinances, would be a blessing to 3/4 of them, but the ordinances & misfortunes will put them right back where we found them. If the county wants to help, not dictate, they'll be helpful. If the dictate no pets, no smoking, no visitors, church service required, vaccines mandatory, well, that's where personal rights are being violated and they'd rather use drugs to help them than the system. Liberty is within the heart, mind, soul, and must be respected.
" Liberty is within the heart, mind, soul, and must be respected."
But you shouldn't expect others to pay for it.
I don't expect, nor do I wish for, others to pay for the dictatorship of my country.
I do expect, & wish for, others to pay for the Liberty of my country.
Our taxes, ordinances, and laws are supposed to protect our inalienable rights, not destroy them.
You want freedom from poverty, homelessness, drugs, then fight against tyranny instead of defending it.
well, this is an entertaining thread where the local Libertarian gets his 'pay for it' rant sorta levered into 'as taxes by government'(taxpayers's collected taxes or something) flung back at him.
Ouch.
As a big government liberal I support the anonymous commentor in his pursuit of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And freedom.
I am also reminded of the article about (redstate) Utah's housing the homeless solution on Tuluwat Examiner...a solution also mentioned in comments about the homeless issue that the costs to police the homeless 'problem' exceeds, far exceeds the cost to simply house them. It makes a certain degree of sense.
If this is 'running government like a business' I'll join Fred at the debate infirmary.
My thoughts do not, in any way, support Govt dependence. Quite the contrary. I support independence, self sufficiency, that only true Liberty provides.
De-funding all unconstitutional agencies and laws, including ordinances, is Liberty from Government enslavement.
A Socialist Liberal believes all people should be equal. A libertarian believes all people should retain the right to equal opportunities. I am a Libertarian. It is the individuals responsibility to ready themselves for when opportunity knocks.
I chastised Fred, for falling prey to the powers of should's and should nots, do's & dont's, and leaving liberty on the back burner. This is the very same reason homelessness abounds in the first place. We need to pull together and fight the over regulations that drive people to the bush.
Our taxes, pay for officials to protect our Constitution. Instead, they are regulating liberty under false guises. It's time to deregulate and take set our liberty free so that we all have the same opportunities.
