Today's Letters

I'm not sure what to make of a couple letters to the Times- Standard today. This one, about robot felines, I don't get at all. Wife says it's from a crazy person. Seems like it, but maybe we're missing something?

This other one is from a lady suggesting Eureka's kids need a curfew. I'm not sure she makes a very good case for it. A couple kids made her nervous at 7:25pm earlier this month. It should still be daylight at that time. They flashed her some gang signals and seemed to be acting suspicious. Then they left the area.

Not sure what the exact problem is there. And how would a curfew help with that sort of thing, unless we keep the kids home all the time?

The cat letters are not nearly as humorous as the author think they are. What Eureka's kids need is not a curfew but PARENTS who have a clue.

In some instances, it could well be the parents taught the kids the gang symbols.

Fair enough to suggest they don't have a clue. I can think of at least one that didn't. He wanted to believe in the goodness of his kid.

Working at juvenile hall decades ago, we got a "transfer in". That's a kid switched to our jurisdiction from out of county. This kid was switched when his parents moved up from L.A.

I asked his dad why they moved up here. He said "to get him (the kid) away from the gangs". Little did the father realize his kid WAS the gang.

That kid was already 18, or close to it. Not long after I left the hall he was in the news as the head honcho of a gang he put together once back on the outs. They did a drive by shooting of some asian kid at the Bayshore Mall that some of you may remember.

That was that "Ernesto", and I don't know that I could blame his father for it.

Yeah, there's always that.
