Fullerton Writes On Homeless Solutions
Local accountant and self declared candidate for Eureka City Council, John Fullerton, has a column in the Times- Standard this morning taking issue with recent proposals to deal with the homeless in the county. He rightfully points out that there aren't enough rentals in the county to house all the homeless and, even if there were, landlords might not want to rent to them.
He made a somewhat critical comment on his Facebook page not long ago about recent proposals. I had to ask him if he had any better suggestions. He didn't, but he's looked a bit deeper into the issue than I have. He seems to be further along than many others are in looking at the issue. He's got me beat. I have no idea what the solution might be.

Being a property owner, I have experienced first hand, ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, the unruly, dirty, destructive and barbaric lifestyle of such persons. Not all, but most are homeless, because of their own decisions and actions.
Indeed many are beyond help. Nothing we can do for them. Many just do not want to work, they would prefer to steal. Many are so focused on getting high, that they are unable and incapable of holding a job. I do not claim that to be true for all, but IT IS true for the majority.
they should just round up a bus load , give them all a baggie of confiscated pot , 50$ and bus them to another city 500 miles away . prolly cheaper in the long run
If there is a shortage of housing (and Mr. Fullerton is correct, there is) then the solution is to build more housing. That in turn, it is feared will depress housing values as the shortage artificially inflates the cost of housing. So if you own housing in Eureka you will be opposed to that solution. The construction and development of tiny houses in areas where the homeless already congregate is a practical alternative.
Unless Mr. Fullerton has moved he does not live in the Eureka City limits, he lives in the County and therefore he cannot run for the Eureka City Council.
His comments on the homeless housing problems are spot on.
I moved almost two years ago and now live inside the city limits.
I agree the tiny house concept needs some support. I want to add that there needs to also be some incentive for the inhabitants to keep the "village" clean and even improve the area where they are.
Good comments John. We need forward and practical thinking on this issue.
Then we need some actual action!
A housing shortage suggests not enough housing.
This is somewhat deceptive in that to say "x" number of homeless are unhoused = a housing shortage.
If a housing shortage is based only on the number of homeless, then the appearance is that throughout time, there will never be a moment where there is not a housing shortage.
As HOJ has opined, ya can't help those who are not willing to help themselves. It is called self respect. Let those who don't want to pay their fair share continue to be homeless.
Let's talk about paying their fair share, if you can afford rent these days you are paying someone else's mortgage plus a profit on top. Therefore in theory renters can all afford their own houses, but our credit system will not allow it.
