Eureka Smoking Ban

As you might imagine, I'm livid over Eureka's new smoking ban passed last month as reported by the North Coast Journal. What really gets me about things like this is how casual city council critters are about restricting people's liberties. It seems like individual liberty is the last thing on their minds.

Since this passed unanimously, it's clear in my mind that none of those sitting on the Eureka City Council deserve re- election, but I might give Frank Jager a pass. He was the sole NO vote on a previously passed smoking ban, if memory serves me correct. I was under the impression he would be voting against this one. Wonder why he gave in to the Forces of Darkness?

Life precedes liberty in the Declaration of Independence. I favor my not dying for your smoking pleasure when entering a public building -- something that has in fact almost happened to me because of a smoker. Educate yourself.

Sounds like bullshit to me, although I'm not sure what exactly some smoker did that supposedly almost killed you.

This ban goes beyond indoor smoking and even beyond the smoking ban on the most windswept part of Eureka- the boardwalk.

Fred, people now have the liberty to breath clean air. Why should we give up that liberty for some dumb-ass smoker?

Because you need to learn to live and let live. We're not even talking in buildings anymore. We're talking outdoors and in some of the most windswept, well ventilated places in town.

Many things we do can affect other people. You need to learn to be more tolerant. As we keep attacking each over every thing somebody else does, soon nobody will be able to do anything.

Automobile exhaust can be very harmful to people's health. Should we stop people from driving cars? Some folks think we should.

First they came for the communists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist...

Lock yourself in a sealed garage with a running car and a chain smoker. Which one will kill you first? Where is the ban on automobiles?

Fred is right on this one. I've never been more disappointed in this city before.

Prohibition..makes a crime out of things that are not crimes..
A prohibion law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.

I actually agree with old Fred here.
Is second hand smoke unhealthy to innocent bystanders? Yes. Should businesses and consumers be able to choose for themselves regarding the matter? Yes. But in the end there should have been freedom enough for smoking and non smoking businesses.
Everything else is hyperbole.

Answer the question lodgepole. Why aren't fascists such as yourself trying to ban cars?

I have a friend who lives in an apartment close to Old Town who has a fairly severe case of asthma which exasperates when coming anywhere near smoke of just about any sort. This person once had the benefit of having neighbors respectful enough to smoke away from the building and often would just take a walk to the boardwalk or find another spot to puff without causing harm to anyone. Now that this ordinance has passed my friend now has to deal with neighbors who now are forced to smoke right outside the building, yet within the legal distance, which causes a large hardship because of a newly formed personal conflict with the neighbor who once had the right to smoke without affecting my friend's health.

Ban cars?! Hell I'd have done that last week if it weren't for this bad cough.

Don't forget wood stoves. Fascists need to ban those too. Lots of em in eureka. But don't ban all of them, or else how will the fascists like Lodgepole incinerate their victims bodies?

Cigarette smoke is as irritating to the lungs of an asthmatic child as pepper spray is to the lungs of your average adult.

You people who have been blessed not to suffer from lung disorders ought to think about that before you light up indoors or outdoors.

Watch where your smoke goes and see the effect it has on other people, if you care about anyone besides yourself.

I think that smoking is one of the most inconsiderate habit one can have. When one smokes they obviously don't give a thought to all the people around them. So I am sure you can tell I am all for the smoking ban!
