Arcata Eye Backs Dikeman?
Unbelievable, especially as the online version of the editorial is dated May 30 and today's the 29th. I'll have to give them credit as, not having read the Arcata Eye much, I assumed they might well give straight lefty election recommendations.
I'll have to admit, I like Hoover's(?) writing style. He's an easy read, even if I don't agree with him- the last endorsement of the Eye I'm aware of supporting Measure T.
I've been trying to remember to check the Eye's web page once a week to see what's going on there, but I often forget if there's too much news in the other local papers.
I'll have to be sure and check back there, if for no other reason than to see if I can get some ideas from his style of writing.

Kevin's right.
The kid has wrecked the car.
Time to give back the car keys.
This doesn't shock me a whole lot. Hoover is liberal, but he's also very independent. Don't agree with him here, but I respect that his conclusion was arrived at honestly. Hoover has never been impressed with Gallegos, and they had a tiff awhile back though I don't remember the details. I noticed that Jim Fahey's endorsement of Dikeman is also on that page. This could breath some new life into Dikeman's campaign, with 40 thousand left for a media push. Guess I'd better get another donation in to Gallegos immediately.
Some lefties around here are going to cite a claim that R. Arkley has recently purchased an interest in the Eye as the impetus for the endorsement, but it's not in Hoover's character to cave to pressure, if any.
Well, life is interesting.
My own piece against Measure T is going to come out in the same issue. I thought I was going to catch grief for it, but now I'm really in trouble!
Your own piece against Measure T? Way to go!
BTW, Rose just reminded me the Eye published a series of different opinions on T a week or so ago. I'd read it earlier and almost mentioned it here but for some reason, decided not to.
Check out the Eye's web page if interested.
Gallegos raised more money - he just misspent it
hoover worships at the altar of the arcata police department. he always has. anything they say, goes, no matter who else gets hurt. with his support of conservatives like city councilors machi and wheetley you'd be hard pressed to call him a lefty.
Gallegos was elected to his current term in large part because of Arkley's assistance. He IS the Arkley candidate.
Hoover had a tiff with Gallegos alright...the man votes based on who he hates the least, its never about the politics its about the personalities with him.
It is my belief that the Eye is 100% owned by Kevin Hoover.
If you have any evidence that Arkley has purchased an interest in The Eye present it.
It seems obvious that people are trying to undermine Kevin's reputation with these undocumented allegations.

no one mentioned an arkley-hoover connection except you.
Erik wrote: "Some lefties around here are going to cite a claim that R. Arkley has recently purchased an interest in the Eye as the impetus for the endorsement..."
My apologies to Erik and others, but I interpreted this comment (reasonably, I think) to imply that Arkley has purchased an interest in the Eye.
Can you clarify your comment, Erik?
The same whackos who claim Arkley also owns the Journal
THAT is a great f-cking editorial endorsement! Every paragraph says more than just the words... there's a deeper understanding and message there.
"Having successfully defended our democracy, we owe it to ourselves to exercise our right to critically examine, contrast and compare the candidates on their individual merits.
Alas, tribalism is alive and well in local politics, and alliances forged during the recall have sprung to life again. We scolded the law enforcement community for buying in to the Maxxam attack on public process, and by the same token we now have to fault some on the progressive side for signing back up with the incumbent without a fair reassessment of the two candidates."
"Gallegos’ commitment to the job is half-hearted. His work ethic is poor. His hiring practices and choices are abysmal. The staff churn in the DA’s office is a direct result of weak-to-nonexistent leadership. Arcata Police aren’t getting follow-through on their earnest, difficult work for the community. Crucial programs such as the Child Abuse Services Team are in trouble. No laughing party at the Avalon or the Grange is going to restore any of this."
Someone saw though the fairy tale veil. It has been pulled down. Pierced by the watchful Eye.
Millionaire Judy Hodgson owns the Journal. Her self-described "good friend" billionaire Rob Arkley owns the Reporter.
Good thing the Arcate Eye, Times-Standard and the Humboldt Advocate are here....
I have read with great interest your recent comments, Erik. I admit I am also curious about what you mean by the statement "some lefties around here are going to cite a claim that R. Arkley has recently purchased an interest in the Eye as the impetus for the endorsement..."
Are you saying that some people will say "Arkley has recently purchased an interest in the Eye" even though it isn't true?
Or are you saying that "Arkley has recently bought an interest in the Eye but it wont effect how Keven runs it?"
Or are you saying something else?
Wow. A controversy!
I attended a Gallegos fundraiser last weekend in Garberville. Somebody there told me that Arkley recently bought into the Eye, and yes, the NC Journal. We had been discussing the NCJ article on Ed Denson and Gallegos' alleged cover up of a crime Allison Jackson believes Denson committed, and a letter I had just written and e-mailed off to the NCJ. I didn't think much of it, and it doesn't matter to me if he does have an interest in either paper.
I don't feel comfortable posting the name of the individual, but if it is indeed a vicious rumor being deliberately circulated to pre-empt this morning's endorsement and the NCJ's, well, I doubt this one individual is the problem anyway.
Anyway, if they're public corporations anybody has the right to buy stock. It doesn't concern me one way or another.
And you know, I still think Gallegos is going to win it, though the Eye editorial is a blow. The reason - I just went to Worth Dikeman's website, and the home page is all about Paul, not Worth. Paul is talking about Paul, and Worth is talking about Paul. Nobody's talking about Worth or why he would make a good DA. What's his vision of leadership? Does he intend to bring us back to Terry Farmer's style of leadership (which didn't to him too well in the end), or is he offering something new?
You can't win on an all negative campaign. The Democrats may learn this on the national scale in the fall.
oh, god eric, you've gone and blown it entirely. you seemed like a guy with a little bit of sense, and now you go falling for all the old rumor-mongering, and bring it up like it is something new. salzman wishes it was true and he brings it up on his megaphone (KMUD), but it is false, has always been false, and probably always will be false. they're not coorporations or publicly owned papers, they're people making a living here in one of the toughest places to do that. far as I know kevin is a sole proprietor, and the journal is owned by two women, neither of them a millionaire. that is hilarious!
your credibility is shot. dang, i was starting to like you.
all dikeman has to do to be a better DA than Paul is show up for work. the fact that he can do infinitely more than that is something you would care about if you had a modicum of sense.
9:20 If you keep trying, you'll be able to have a discussion in which people have different points of view without making personal attacks on the speaker. C'mon, you can do it!
I understand that the NCJ is printed on Arkley's printing press. That may be an unsubstantiated rumor.
Of course he's offering something new. Look on Worth's web site at the comments from his colleagues. There is tons of good information in the papers about Worth. Most everyone who has worked with him really respects him - jury members, crime survivors, victims' families, lawyers, office staff, agency workers, cops, defendants (especially those whose cases he's dismissed if the cases were bad), judges, etc. etc. Respect is the operative word. He's not buddy-buddy with these people. He's fair and honest and mostly I think leads by example.
Gallegos's campaign keeps trying to pin ridiculous labels and false associations and conspiracy theories on him. The whole Arkley thing is bizarre (not to mention some of the above nonsense about Hoover et al.) Worth has done a great job working for both Farmer and for Gallegos - why do people try to insinuate that he would be anything like either of them? That hot-button stuff just smacks of trying to divert attention from the real issues.
the humboldt advocate? what a fucking joke, they don't even pretend to be ethical. the north coast journal staff are grown up enough to engage in real dialogue with their readers. have you ever read a letter critical of the advocate in the advocate? no, and you never will.
yeah - and they printed on patrick odell's printing press, too. you really just have no idea what you are talking about. that's like saying because you go to kinko's that kinko's paid you to come in the door, it's just a completely fallacious line of thought.
see, thats the twisted attitude of measure t and shawn warford, you do business with arkley, you must be evil, you do business with any nonlocal corporation, you must be corrupt.
This is too funny! I remember an episode of West Wing where the character Josh Lymon gets into trouble on an internet forum, and no matter what he says, no matter how innocuous, he manages to piss somebody off. I didn't quite get it. I get it now.
Who's Shawn Warford anyway? And how do you guys recognize each other?
Did I say anythign about Kevin Hoover being a millionaire?
But I realize now that I've been a patsy to a sinister plot. You see, somebody told me at the event last week that, well, I better not repeat it, knowing that I would post it on Fred's Blog as soon as the Eye editorial came out - sort of like the Manchurian Candidate. Now, I hadn't yet discovered Fred's Blog, but these conspirators you see, they rigged my computer, or Google, and made sure I'd find it. And now, the rumor's spread, and the damage done.
Yes, THAT's how P. Gallegos has been spending his money.
What's the internet phrase? Oh yeah, "lol."
Okay, I received an e-mail that suggested this might be a little more serious than I'd considered - at least in terms of the personal feelings of certain individuals, which is more than enough in my book. Honestly, I didn't even think about the conversation until this morning's editorial.
Funny thing is, I thought I was providing a pre-emptive defense and compliment for Hoover. Didn't think I might actually be the mechanism for the plot.
Let me repeat that while I have differences of opinion with both Hoover and Sims, probably on a number of issues, I certainly have respect for both, and I read both papers on a regular basis. As to someone buying in on a paper, I'd only be concerned, assuming it was true, if there was a change in the substance of the writing. There hasn't been.
And for the record, I also enjoy reading the Humboldt Advocate - especially the Weird News column.
Don't like watching Fox News however. Not just the right wing politics and mandatory moronic phrases like "homicide bomber" to editorialize in every story. I don't like being yelled at in my own living room. What's especially annoying is that the rest of the television news industry is starting to copy them. Even Olberman.
And I just discovered that when I'm up in Northern Humboldt, I can hear Stephanie Miller in the morning. Same station also plays "Dr." Laura though. Probably Arkley's influence.
Tired. Good night.
I am with 9:20 am - Erik, your credibility is shot completely. You sound like a broken record. Please keep printing the "rumors" that are given to you to blog. It keeps the rest of us all aware of how easy Salzman/Gallegos can spread lies. So nice to see how easily you play along with them.
At any minute I expect CJ Craig to storm into my office telling me to knock it off. I'm sold. This medium is entertaining beyond measure. Now, I could swear that another anonymous poster recently told me that I'd lost my credibility even before this incident (due to my letter to the NCJ). Coincidentally, that poster also mispelled my name with a "k."
In any case, I will be spreading the "rumor" (hey, anon 8:09 used the quotes) further by discussing it on my next radio show, along with other post-election wrap-up matters. KMUD, June 15, 7:00 p.m. Call in and let me have it!
local solutions has abandoned all pretext of being an independent political group, the mask is off, no candidate interviews this time, no helping "progressive" candidates get elected, just flat out begging for money for Paul... anyone who was fooled into giving them money on thier "grassroots" pretext ought to get their money back

Got more work to do ... now the Arcata Eye is coming out for Worth, with a artillery blitz of op ed pieces pro Worth ...
So money, volunteer time, our OWN OpEDs / letters to the editor, and public statements by people in places to do so, about Worth's endless lies!
Eye Editorial: Elect an adult with a work ethic - May 30, 2006
Which of the district attorney candidates would you rather have a beer with?
Which would you rather have representing you in court?
The answers to both questions are instantly obvious, and form the basis for our enthusiastic support of Worth Dikeman for Humboldt County District Attorney.

A systematic analysis of the two DA candidates dispels any uncertainty - May 30, 2006 by attorney Jim Fahey
(says "vote for Worth" at the end after making a seemingly long legitimate case weighing the pro-s and cons)

and of course Worth chimes in with ...
"I don't think (Gallegos) will do as well in Arcata this time - or anyplace else."
Asked why not, Dikeman explained that he lives in Arcata and "I like to think that there are thinking people in Arcata, people who will read the local papers and make up their own minds." He added that "when they do that, when they evaluate all the information that's available to them, they're going to vote for me."

Scared yet? Worried that Worth is getting away with these lies? DO SOMETHING! = donate, write, public people do press releases telling of Worth's lies, and GET OUT AND VOTE. Call 476-0552.to see what they're need - and what you can do ... or drop by Paul's HQ 226 F Street in Eureka (that's across the street from the Ice Cream shop in Old Town Eureka, just in the block behind the Ritz) and ask what you can do to help!
Thank you,
Eric
Which lies would those be Eric/Erik?
The "lies" like the DAs own statistics showing how he has run the Child Abuse Services Team into the ground? Those lies?
The "lies" told by people in the office about what it is like to work with him? About the hostile work environment that he has created?
The "lies" that people are leaving the office?
Hate to tell you Eric/k - but those are real people talking and the truth hurts Paul.
Nice try.
Jim Fahey's opinion piece in the Arcata Eye describes Paul Gallegos perfectly.
Fahey is obviously a bright guy who was able to see who Gallegos really is, unlike some of the journalist here in Humboldt County.
Knowing Paul, I can tell you that Fahey's assessment is spot on.
Not all that intellectual, boastful, self promoting, self aggrandizing...that sums him up well.
Oh, I forgot...
PS: Worth's 5/22/06 campaign report showed him with $37,000 CASH to spend in the last weeks of the campaign, with Gallegos at about ZERO.
ZERO - after raising $81.000?
Don't throw good money after bad.
Not that it matters, but you've got the wrong Eric/Erik.
Well then someone is posting under your name.
Yeah, cause I'm the only Eric on the planet.
The only Eric V. Kirk.
Well, that's probably true. But no Eric V. Kirk works for Local Solutions. That's another Eric.
Eric wrote: "I will be spreading the "rumor" (hey, anon 8:09 used the quotes) further by discussing it on my next radio show.".
I didn't know you had a radio show. Cool. Be sure and give my blog a plug and be sure to post a remider here about when your show will be on. Hopefully I'll be in town and will be able to tune in, that's if I remember.
Yep. Third thursday of the month. Title is "All things Reconsidered," at least until I hear from NPR's attorneys.
I definitely intend to plug your blog Fred. I've already send links around to some friends who might find it interesting. There doesn't seem to be any other local net forum that draws from all sides of the debates.
You must rate high on Google. I don't remember what I was looking for when I found you, but it was the third or fourth hit listed.
I've interviewed non-liberals on several occassions, including the reknowned David Horowitz (that was a lively show). I try not to be predictable.
The Times-Standard started printing the News of the Wierd way before those dittoheads at the Advocate.
Okay, but now I can get it for free. TS doesn't publish Maureen Dowd or Alex Cockburn either. Nor This Modern World.
I wish they had more local non-syndicated writing, but hey, the more papers the merrier. I even pick up the EJ when I can.
Alexander Cockburn publishes out of Humboldt County (Petrolia), why not go straight to the source? I've seen the ER run Dowd before also.
So I can go to TS for weird news. ER for Maureen Dowd. Probably TS for Molly Ivins. The AVA or directly to Counterpunch for Cockburn. And I guess I can go to the SF Bay Guardian for Tom Tomorrow.
You're right. Who needs the Advocate?
I'll never pick up a copy again. Not unless they give me a break on the price.
Fred, if Erik can plug his radio show here, can I? If I asked you nicely to let me tell blogwatchers here to tune in this coming Sunday to the Steve Lewis Show this coming Sunday, June 4th, from 1:30 to 3:00 pm on KMUD radio, focusing on Measure T with guests Chris Crawford and Allison Jackson, if I asked to say this, would it be ok, or not ok. I can live with your answer either way so go ahead and be honest..
Yes you can, Steve.
Hey, if I'm not down at the Summer Arts Festival I'll listen in. But shouldn't you also announce this on your own blog?
In the meantime, if anybody wants my endorsements on the measures and Democratic primary races, contact me at kirk@humboldt.net. I know you've all been waiting with baited breath!
I'm new to the blog scene. My blog site will fill out as I go along. Kirk, whenever someone tells me they're waiting with baited breath I immediately think of those angler fish, the ones with wiggly lure-thingies in their mouths just waiting for the next sucker fish to come along...chomp!
Eric, why not post your endorsements on your blog?
I suppose I'll do that. But when I was signing up to be able to post here, I didn't know I was going to have to set up a blog too. On the spot I chose a really lame name. Haven't learned how to change it.
Actually, I have to figure out how to make another post.
Guess I'll work on that tonight.
I don't know that you actually have to start a blog. I've seen some people posting on blogspot blogs with what appeared to be blog links with their name and when you clicked on the link it was just kind of an empty profile.
I don't think you can change the name of your blog without starting a new blog.
Well, I'll try to figure it out tonight. I think I want to emphasize Southern Humboldt - I may be our only blogger.
Actually, I was hoping to create a group blog of writers down here. I'm posting a lot because I'm on the computer all week, but there are going to be large amounts of time where I can't post at all. If there are other people making posts, it would help to keep it vibrant.
Meanwhile heraldo, I made the first comment on your blog.
And I'm not sure if my op-ed piece will be on the online version of the Arcata Eye, but here is a link to their "scrutinizers" column this week about the DA race. Hoover takes in short opinions of a variety of community folk and publishes them in one column.
http://www.arcataeye.com/index.php?module=Pagesetter&tid=2&topic=4&func=viewpub&pid=124&format=full
There, I posted them.
I guess you can access them by clicking on the blue letters composing my name.
Yeah, I'm a computer illiterate.
Hoover's scrutinizer's is always a great read, wide spectrum, something to agree with, some to disagree with - love it.
It turns out, you can change your title!
Not only did the Arcata Eye endorse Dikeman, so did the Advocate and the McKinleyville Press.
The Advocate?
Uh, the Advocate? I find that very hard to believe. You sure you've got the right paper?
Wow! Maybe the Advocate has a chance after all. I'll have to pick it up. The ability to stand up to the tide, that would be a good trait. I'd have to say I would be surprised and impressed.
the advocate didnt endorse dikeman, theyre too lame to endorse anything besides measure t.
Warford thinks it's unethical to make endorsements. Did he flip flop?
is that why shawn warford endorsed measure t? endorsements are always unethical except when they're used to beat up on his old nemesis north coast journal.
Warford doesn't believe in endorsements, unless it gives him an opportuity to bash his former employer, the ones who fired him? That's ethical? Did he poop in the coffee pot before being fired?
Great site lots of usefull infomation here.
