What A Scoop!
Wow! You heard it first here, folks. I just found out who one of the candidates for Eureka City Council is going to be: Local gadfly and city hall groupie, Patricia "Tish" Wilburn, has taken out papers for the 1st Ward, currently held by Mary Beth Wolford. This will be her second attempt at the seat. A few years ago she got 22% in a three way race.
In her case this doesn't raise the Marina Center controversy as an issue. She says she's not all that concerned about that, one way or the other. She says she wants to deal with crime in the city.
Guess who was in the car with Tish. Nope, not Chris Kerrigan. It was Sue Brandenburg, the gal who took over the lawsuit against the Eureka Redevelopment Agency when the Humboldt Taxpayer's League gave up on it. Sue says she's not Tish's campaign manager, but it sure makes you wonder.
The big question is, will any one else throw their hat in the ring for the 1st Ward?

should make for a good cat fight.
Here's a scoop for ya fred. The DUHC is a socialist coven full of little Marxist wannabees. How do you feel about the DUHC?
A possible conservative candidate? Deliver us from the locosolutions cabal?
When you say gadfly, fred, do you mean she is involved and concerned, or she is like David Elsebush?
Is Mary Beth running again?
Memo to the ER and T-S: Fred OWNZ you.
Sorry, but Fred is scooping you both hard core!
Love ya', Fred!

I don't know about "conservative". She's all over the place on issues. Two causes she was active in were fighting against that cell phone tower on Broadway- she didn't want it to be higher than was normally allowed (TV News featured a segment with her on that)- and she was quite active in the anti- Walmart thing.
On Measure T, I just about had to twist her arm to get her to add her name to our NO On T list.
She used to be quite a Kerrigan supporter, but I think she's backed off on that a bit.
"When you say gadfly, fred, do you mean she is involved and concerned, or she is like David Elsebush?"
I'm not sure just how involved she is now, but she used to frequent city council meetings and knows a lot of the politicos in town.
Don't know about Elsebush. I'm acquainted with him and it seems to me he is involved and concerned, but don't know enough to say more than that.
"Is Mary Beth running again?"
Oh, I believe all the incumbent council critters, and the mayor, are running again. Unless I'm mistaken, Chris Kerrigan is the only one who's seat isn't up for grabs.
And V. Bass Jackson
Doesn't sound like she is all over the map,
those positions are pretty consistent:
against that cell phone tower on Broadway
quite active in the anti- Walmart thing.
Not really against Measure T
a Kerrigan supporter,
Doesn't sound conservative.
Sounds like part of the shut it down
locosolutions crowd.
How does Sue Brandenburg figure into the equation. I would've assumed she was pro-business, fiscal conservative. Maybe that was a bad guess.
wingnuts for city council... great scoops fred.
Hey Fred, you know any registered libs in Eureka that would want to run for a seat? And when is the last(if ever)time a lib has served?I can't think of anyone off hand.
If Chris Kerrigan can be a council person ANYBODY can ....... (Harmony Groves ?)
does anyone know if Chris K. has ever had a steady job, or even balanced his own checking account ?
mresquan, Tish *is* a registered Libertarian. And she deserves out thanks for running, and I will proudly vote for her.
She has taken principled positions:
She opposed the cell phone tower on Broadway b/c placing it there was not in the public interest.
She opposed Walmart.
She opposed Measure T.
She originally supported Kerrigan, but has cooled on him.
But here is the real question: Will she support private enterprise (Marina Center)?
mresquan asks: "And when is the last(if ever)time a lib has served?".
I don't know that any libs have ever won a seat on the Eureka city council. As mentioned above, Tish is a registered LPer and ran a few years ago. T. Great Razooly is a registered LPer, as well. He lost in his bid for mayor a while back.
Mckinleyville had a couple LPers on the Community Services District: Will Wennerholm, who sits on the board today, and John Fleury, who won but ended up having to move out of state shortly after taking office.
Robert Noble sat on the Arcata City Council for one term and Phil Leavitt used to be on the Carlotta Community Services District Board. I don't know if he's still there or not.
anon 12:56,Chris has a job,his own small business :Kerrigan and associates:Now I'm not sure how much he does, and how busy he stays. It's an advertising agency I believe, with one or two employees.Do your own research from here.I spoke personally to Sue while I was tabling for measure T at the co-op a while back, and we had a nice conversation despite her eventual opposition(she said she was undecided then). Then,a few weeks later,as I'm preparing to canvass her neighborhood,I noticed that her named had been added to the no on T website.Although I'm not sure just how ardently no she was.
From hearing her speak at council meetings about big business, big box stuff,I would assume she's for Marina Center minus Home Depot(she opposed Walmart),but I could be wrong.I'm sure she's for anything that'll get the riff-raff outta there.Crime is her thing, and putting a big box there won't quell the crime issue,if anything it 'll increase it.
"I spoke personally to Sue...".
Sue? Do you mean Tish? Looking back at our list of No On T endorsers I don't see any Sue listed.
No,I meant Sue.Tish's name was on your list, and I've seen the two together and a lot of their opinions are kind of alike, and some other HCCR volunteers told me that she was probably against it(maybe that was incorrect). So since I had already spoken with her at the co-op,I didn't deem it necessary to talk to her at her home.I gave her all of the contact info necessary if she had any other questions to ask, when I spoke to her. I don't think she did.
Sue also had some strong words against LNG, if I remember correctly.
Ok. I don't believe I ever heard of Sue Brandenburg until she took over the Taxpayer League lawsuit against Eureka Redevelopment.
With Sue and Tish together, I can't help but think there's some agenda on line other than just fighting crime? I don't mean anything nasty by that, as I consider Tish a friend. It just seems rather odd that all they've talked about so far is crime and the homeless.
Tish is a great gal but would probably not make a great council member. Next?
Great gal? Sounds more like Loraine the the Elk's.
Really amazing! Useful information. All the best.
