Is Hotel Work For Me?

Having been staying at hotels and motels fairly regularly over the last couple years, I got to thinking that working the front desk at one might be a good job for me. After all, no more dealing with the weather and probably little, if any, physical labor involved.

I started thinking twice when I read about the guy working at the Budget Inn in Eureka being attacked. I suspect that wasn't work related, though.

Isn't the Budget Inn the old Carson House Inn?

I was half seriously thinking of applying for a job at Eureka's Quality Inn. I keep seeing ads in the Help Wanted section of the papers for front desk positions there.

Not sure just how nice a place Quality Inn is. You also have to wonder when you see ads up for the same job all the time. Why is the position so hard to fill?

Anyone know if Quality Inn is one of those places the county houses homeless people? From what I've seen just by driving by, it doesn't seem to be.

The Quality Inn is owned by the Mcdonald family - you know, Jill, Sally and Polly Endert...so my guess would be a "no."

If you've been paying attention to the TeenChallenge fiasco you'll find out that Peter Lavallee isn't needed to do that. Only they charge for room and board, and at taxpayer expense.

I think it is the wage they are willing to pay. Min wage + 5 cents isn't enough for me to work graveyards, anymore.

I was surprised while reading the Help Wanted ads a while back. I believe it was Red Lion Inn that had an opening for a front desk clerk and was paying $8.00 an hour. One of the other smaller hotels in town- it might have been Quality Inn- was paying more. Don't recall the exact pay being offered just remember being surprised at the Red Lion paying less.

I figure if I could make $10 an hour, full time, that would equal what I'm making now part- time.

$8/hr to kiss the public's ass?

No thankee.

Oh, and most robberies occur on the night shift.

Fred, you'd be great. Whatever you decide to do.

So Fred you want to work full time for the same pay as part time now? That doesn't compute in my book. And you might lose your welfare coverage, that would be a big hit on your finances too. But you couldn't get a job anyhow. Anyone interviewing you, even in Humboldt, won't like what they see, unskilled, inept, sloppy, and definitely NOT customer service oriented.

Are you only getting $10/hour for landscaping, Fred? You should be able to get much more per hour.

I usually get between $20 to $35 an hour, depending on the time of year. Every now and then, when things are going just right, I might make $40 or $50 an hour.

Problem is, I can only handle yard work from between 2 to 4 hours a day. After that I've had enough of it.

So, I might get $60 one day, $80 the next and $100ish the day after that. Probably averages out at the end of the month to what a guy making $10 an hour would bring in.

Not sure if that includes expenses or not.

but then one of the in crowd could get a big salary to manage it. Peter wants to keep the welfare in the correct political camp.

Maybe you should get your GED so you will be taken more seriously by prospective employers.

Maybe you should learn a skill that would get you above competing with 13 year old boys.

Fred, don't you think you should apply for a job with some sort of benefits? Eureka city schools is hiring janitorial staff, and they provide benefits. Just settling in for a life of poverty at your age is going to have drastic and tragic consequences. Maybe now is the time for you to act like a man and provide for someone other than yourself.

Fred, at your age just find some crappy job and spend the rest of your life enjoying yourself.

Crappy job is just the ticket to round out a crappy life. If there was a job of sticking your head up your backside, Fred would be the most qualified.
