Recyclables Stacking Up
The Santa Rosa Press- Democrat tells us this morning that, due to the crash in the recyclables market, Sonoma County has some recyclables piling up. Looks like they can't even give some things away right now.
I was just at the City Garbage recycling center yesterday and it seemed like business as usual. I wasn't really looking but didn't notice any bigger piles of recyclables laying around than usual. Is Eureka avoiding the pile ups because the recyclables get sent to Arcata for sorting? Or is that not a problem up here for some reason?

I recycle at the H.W.M.A. in Eureka. A few months ago, they stopped with the bins that seperated glass and plastic and now one just dumps it all into one bin, or if you want money you, have to weigh the seperated recycling first.
Fred--The recyclables from Eureka and Arcata get sorted out at the new facility in Samoa, where they are indeed piling up. Hours have been cut at both recycling centers and some employees have been laid off as a result. The crash in prices for recycled commodities is taking a serious toll on recycling's economic viability...
I know, and it still makes me cringe to see that. I think they do it that way now because all that stuff is then sent to Arcata where they sort it out.
It probably makes sense as they likely had problems with people dumping stuff in the wrong bins. Although seemingly idiot proof now, I still see stuff thrown in the wrong bins, never mind things thrown in that aren't supposed to be there at all like the signs say.

Yes, I remember reading they were cutting people's hours there but wasn't sure about stuff piling up. And, yes, the Samoa one was what I was referring to.
