State of Jefferson Redux
Seems rather odd to see the State of Jefferson brought up in the Times- Standard's Business Section this morning. The writer sees merit in making at least some Northern California counties a separate state. The problem I have with it is he sees Humboldt a candidate for this new state based on "a libertarian streak...self sufficiency and hard work...", among other things.
I beg to differ. Humboldt seemed to have a somewhat live and let live attitude when I first moved up here, with the exception of a few blue noses that went after porn shops every now and then. It's not that way anymore. Humboldt County, more and more, seems to be becoming an extension of the San Francisco authoritarian mentality. Hardly deserving to be included into a new state based on any form of libertarianism.
If the state were to be divided, it would make more sense to have it divided along a north/ south axis, with Humboldt County attached to San Francisco where it sadly belongs.

Although I don't have as many libertarian beliefs as Fred does,I do indeed support the State of Jefferson ideal, despite likely putting myself into a minority sector. And I am concerned that the southern Oregon lib sect behind it tend to back war party, and anti-homo ideals.
As far as our county goes,Fred, your concerns are over reacting as you are centering on one region of the county, and within that there still is a strong backing for things such as equal protection.
"Humboldt County, more and more, seems to be becoming an extension of the San Francisco authoritarian mentality."
Please elaborate.
Well, just off the top of my head, we have mandatory garbage pick up and recycling, just like SF. We've started all the outside smoking bans just like SF and they've tried, but haven't succeeded yet, with government provided universal wifi service like SF is working on. Give me some time and I'll come up with some others.
I know, Joel, you think those are good things.
I'm not sure about Humboldt County, but there are plenty of people who would support a State of Jefferson here in Siskiyou County and southern OR. As co-author of two books on the State of Jefferson (by Arcadia Publishers), I've interviewed many and since that time the interested parties have vastly increased in number and sympathy. Interesting phenomenon. If you check out our books, IMAGES OF THE STATE OF JEFFERSON and THE STATE OF JEFFERSON: THEN & NOW, you'll see that the 'boundaries' have grown since the earliest days. BTW, the first interest in another state dates back to the gold rush.

Oh, don't forget about ordinances proposed in regards landlords, as Larry Glass had proposed. He may have bailed on it, for now, but I believe he said he wasn't done.
I also read somewhere in the blogs- or was it the Times- Standard comments?- someone proposing rent control, as SF has.
"Oh, don't forget about ordinances proposed in regards landlords, as Larry Glass had proposed. He may have bailed on it, for now, but I believe he said he wasn't done."
Again, you are opining about one specific region in the county, and even in that he was forced to put it away even if just for the time being.
