Pat Buchanan Right Again...On Putin

Pat Buchanan is being too polite in his critique of U.S. policy with Syria, and not praising the Russians enough. I've wrote it here before and write again, we should be thanking the Russians for their intervention, not threatening them.

Thanking them for saving Assad? How are we threatening them? I understand Russia and the US are proposing to meet and discuss military engagement in Syria.

"In making ISIS, not Assad, public enemy No. 1, Putin has it right."
I'll drink to that.

Let's see... Holy Murderous Fascism versus Social Murderous Fascism... yeah I guess it's pretty simple to make a choice.

Besides, just what makes you think the Russians have any real interest in going after ISIS (the Murderous Holy Fascists)? What they care about is keeping their guy Assad (the Murderous Social Fascist) in power so they can maintain their military presence in the Mediterranean.

Not to mention they get to play for the world the "See, we're all there is to keep the Evil Empire of the United States in check" card. Win-Win (but not for anyone but the Russians... that includes not the Syrians).

There's going to be a bad time ahead for all anti-government Syrians and the United States will be put into the position of defending Syrian Moderates against the Russians or backing off.

The Russian Elite has no interest in doing favors for anyone except for the Russian elite.

Pat Buchanan? Oh dear, Fred.

They're acting in their best interests. Buchanan is 100% correct in that, as he is nearly always in discussing world affairs.

I'd like to see Russians kick some ass over there, but they're really not any more capable than we are. Keep in mind their Afghanistan debacle, which they were smart enough to withdraw from.

They don't have to attack anyone, though. If they can just keep some of Syria in Assad's hands and free of jihadists, that is all that would be necessary. Syria is already about half way to where Iraq and Libya are. Let's not let it go completely down the tubes.

To be clear, I'm not suggesting we get involved at all. I am saying if we should be taking any side, it should be the side of a half way decent civilized society as Syria was before we stirred things up. Jihadists win, they're back akin to the stone age.

Everything I've been reading lately is the U.S. warning Russia to stay out or face unspecified consequences. Maybe clearer minds will prevail but our strategy of taking the middle against both sides is insane. Let Russia take over and try to bring some stability to the region. Whether they can do so is anyone's guess.

Fred:

The line you chose to quote was intended to indicate that in my august and learn'ed view (ahem, my blushes) the Russian Elite does not even serve the best interests of Russia herself. Putin has taken the best moves out of the Hitler "How to Make the World a Sorrier Place" playbook and is running with it.

In the end we are back to a world of proxy wars and old men trying to demonstrate they still have balls. You and I both lived through that and by the merest chance of good luck we survived it.

Buchanan's viewpoint is a throw back to that era... the fact that he is now seemingly relevant again scares the daylights out of me.

As for the Syrians, like the Ukrainians... they are just stuck in the middle.

Syria and Russia have been allies for some time. I see nothing wrong with their mutual cooperation, especially if it will bring some sense of stability back to at least part of the country. Again, whether the Russians can accomplish that is anyone's guess.

Well, Buchanan did advise Nixon to destroy those WH tapes. If Dickie had taken his advice just think of what a wonderful world this would be now.

I doubt anyone would notice the difference, assuming they could compare two different histories.

Nixon did many good things, reaching out to China, for instance. And for lefties, I believe he gave you the Environmental Protection Agency.
