Eureka's Panhandling Lawsuit

I'm kinda glad to see someone standing up for the human right of asking for help. The Times- Standard reports on a lawsuit being filed by what seems to be local ambulance chaser, Peter Martin, against the City of Eureka over its recently passed panhandling ordinance. I don't like seeing my city sued, either, but someone has to stand up for those that can't defend themselves.

Is it fair to refer to Martin as an ambulance chaser? I'm not sure but, as John Chiv asks, who funds his lawsuits? In a sense, it doesn't matter, unless you want to argue that he files lawsuits to make some money. Still, in this case, you might consider me to be supportive of the lawsuit.

And what about local lefty activist, Richard Salzman? I'd been under the impression the lawsuit against Arcata's panhandling lawsuit was his doing, only to read in the Times- Standard that Martin was involved in that one, too. Is Salzman funding these suits. If so, good for him.

It would be interesting to follow the money trail here, but that shouldn't distract us from the human rights issues involved.

If he was filing lawsuits to make money, methinks he would file Americans with Disabilities Act lawsuits. As you probably know, ADA lawsuits are almost always won, and so are almost always settled before they have a court date. It's easy money.

Where's the money in standing up for poor panhandlers? I completely don't see the problem Chiv sees. No conspiracy. And, certainly no failure of journalism. It's not a demon-haunted world out there.

Well, if you have sub standard principles mixed with hypocrisy, then ya, ADA can be a money maker, but thing is, ya never saw that piece of shit attorney Jason Singleton go after gubbamint and all its various ADA violations. Hell, next it is transgender bullshit, businesses too.

Agreed Fred,

and what does it matter who funds the suit if the suit is worthy of being filed and served.

Ditsy Hypocrisy................. Chiv the Siv wanting answers when he himself provides zilch when questioned, other than, "it is none of your god damned business."

Got to thinking about starving. It is tell tale that "begging for food as charity" is to be made illegal (think about that.........food to live)

BUT THAT

Less life threatening situations occur whixh are legal panhandling

LIKE

Salvation Army Bell ringer during holiday season

Any number civic groups at local businesses.

Political panhandlng ballot measures, initiatives, etc.

Religious cults/denominations going door to door

Businesses panhandling at the checkout for breast cancer awareness, certain ill people in the community through BANKS, etc...

ETC...............,

Hypocrisy Galore.

None of the activities you mention are happening where traffic safety is placed in jeopardy from panhandling activities.
The courts have already reviewed an identical ordinance and it has passed the review.
Eureka will beat the hack attorney Martin, again.
