That Arcata Shooting

The Lost Coast Outpost reports Arcata police shot a man who came at them "swinging two sticks in an aggressive manner". I'm not criticizing the police for the shooting but, as I pointed out on the LoCO, we should keep in mind what brought this incident about.

Someone called in a report of someone drinking out of an open alcohol container, a violation of city ordinances. That could have just as easily been a call of someone smoking a cigarette in a no- smoking area. Then the rest would have likely unfolded as it did.

Those of you always supportive of more no- smoking zones need to keep in mind that whenever police are called, there's the potential for violence. Imagine some guy walking down the street smoking a cigarette where it's not allowed. Someone reports him to the police and they respond. The officer tells the guy he's not supposed to smoke there and that he's going to be cited. The smoker is pissed "Dammit. I'm just smoking a cigarette!!" and takes a swing at the officer. A struggle ensues. The smoker gets the upper hand. The officer, fearing for his life, pulls his gun and shoots the smoker. Senseless violence, all because of a guy minding his own business, walking down the street smoking a cigarette.

Yes, I believe that could happen, and likely will.

Fred, perhaps you should have read the entire article before commenting.

The clerk called the police, not just "someone".

A business can lose its alcohol sales license for allowing alcohol to be consumed on it's property. The clerk attempted to tell the guy to leave. Then, after being threatened, he called policy and called police.

Comparing a violent drunk to a passing cigarette smoker only shows how much of an ass you are.

Regardless, the whole thing started over a violation of a city ordinance that was, in itself, non- violent.

It was not non-violent, he was unfazed by the taser and he charged at the officers with metal pipe and stick.

Whether I agree with your opinion or not Fred or other opinions, you all need to read other news sources besides LOCO that had the complete facts. KIEM broke the story, they also bothered to update with accurate and more details.

The drunk man could have charged at anyone besides a police officer and then all of you would be cheering on whoever sued the store or the police.

The original complaint, no matter who it originated from, was for a non- violent offense.

I'm suggesting, if we reduce the opportunity for violent encounters between police and whomever, maybe we could reduce unpleasant results.

I know; easier said, or written, than done.

All of Eureka's surrounding communities are being inundated now that the Devil's Playground has been emptied. Coupled with the thanks to Prop 47 now you can't do anything factor, it's a real problem.

To allow is to give permission, read the article again, the clerk never gave permission, so no way to get in trouble unless historical evidence shows the same clerk or other clerks allowed this guy to do the same in the past......and youd only know if and when a report is taken, etc....

The point is that anytime the cops ate called, violence probability increases BECAUSE cops are agitators, period!

Cops are not peace officers, even though the melodrama con artists would have people believe otherwise.

What is lame is contending the guy displayed martial arts skills as the reason to shoot him multiple times .........holy crap, a drunk Jackie Chan in Arcata, what a hoot to be able to witness a drunk dude displaying dangerous martial arts waving of a cane.

Anybody who waves a stick in Arcata is a martial arts expert, lol.

The popo are Dripping Wet Sloppy Seconds PUSSIES.

Shoulda killed the guy, now Arcata gets sued and loses more because local cops are pussies with cooties fear who wear body louses instead of bullet proof vests.

Chiv, are you lonely over at your home blog, lol.

Fred describes the stupid ordinance, like smoking, being the problem because smoking, like drinking, is often non violent until the cops arrive.

Of course, this was not the Sidelines Bar where dick meets pussy, fights other dick over pussy.

Further, using martial arts as the reason to shoot the guy (AFTER a taser) is weak cheese.

Rather, admit shooting the guy because policy dictates cops are pussies and shall not engage in hand to hand "keeping the peace".

Personally, HOJ would just fire a net gun, but Arcata popo are too cheap to purchase non lethal weapons that will subdue better than a taser! Hell, even keeping a distance for backup since the popo station is less than 6 blocks away.

Humboldt public employees are idiots too often, pure idiots being led by idiots, trained by idiots, protected by the corrupted idiocies.

Rose,

Check your voting track record. Republicans like yourself, Democrats not like yourself, are a significant part of the problem, suffice to say.

Track Records tell the tale. Supporting local grass roots bullshitters and liars is enabling the very cause and effect results you rant and rail against. Please sever your backbone ties with the Republican party, its functions and it's locall bullshitting, local grassroots blackmailing values.

Its understandable if you desire to continue being a republican.

Ad nauseum, ad hominem, ad hominid.
