Private vs. Government Disaster Relief

The Foundation for Economic Education tells the story of private relief efforts in Louisiana's floods. It seems Facebook played a fairly significant role, along with Walmart, although I wonder how Facebook would be usable if you don't have power?

The Walmart where I work(Georgetown, TX) donated cases of water for them. Walmart does do alot of"behind the scenes"support, At least they're using their mega corporation status in a positive way at times.

It was the locals in their little boats rescueing people & animals. The donations from far & wide poured in. The Red Cross turned all local donations down if they were not on contract. Imagine having to watch 60 dozen doughnuts being tossed by Red Cross because the doughnut man wasn't under contract. Blankets & clothes tossed into the wet streets, because the donators were not under contract.
Heaven forbid if you dared enter the tent with a steaming hot cup of CAFFEIENE.
