New Pot Legalization Bill Introduced

This just in from the Marijuana Policy Project:

A bill was introduced to the state assembly this morning by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano that would legalize personal possession and use of marijuana. The bill would also tax it and regulate it. Figures.

Then again, as myself and others have said, pot won't likely ever be made legal unless the government figures out some way to make money on it. I would think at least the Democrats, desperate as they are for money now, would jump in line to become co- sponsors of the bill.

We'll see how it goes.

More info on the bill on MPP's blog.

It is an interesting proposal and I wonder how this would impact the underground economy. Aren't there still backwoods stills around?

Would the $50/ounce tax be collected at dispensaries? How would it be enforced? What is the price of pot per ounce nowadays?

I figured if pot is going for $5,000/pound divided by 16 that would be $312.50/ounce plus $50 for tax would make it $362.50/ounce. But the price per pound may be less. I don't know.

You are right, Fred, if the government can make money . . .
