Dems Merge With Greens?
Is there something happening within the Left in Humboldt County we should know about? The interesting thing about this article in the Eureka Reporter is at the end. A local Democrat asks the Democrat Central Committee if the Democrats are assuming the anti- corporate Green Party agenda. Is this guy's question symptomatic of some growing internal discontent within the Democrats around here, or is he just one of those people every political party has that always tries to stir the pot? You know, the kind of person when he or she shows up at the meeting everyone's like, "Damn. Why did he/ she have to show up again...?". Might well be as the guy claims he wasn't allowed to address the Committee at an earlier meeting.
I've always been under the impression that the local Dems are pretty hard to the Left (rather than what one would call "moderate"), but that's probably cause it's pretty much the hard Left Dems that subscribe to the Lefty e-mail lists I'm on. Looking at the local Dems and Greens recommendations for the November 8 election, one would think they might as well merge as their parties as they only differ on one initiative, with the Greens taking a No Postion on the redistricting initiative and the Democrats, of course, voting No.
But, maybe that's just coincidence this time around. The Libertarians pretty much lined up with the Republicans on all the initiatives but two. I think that's more by accident than by design and it's too bad we didn't have a few more ballot initiatives to take different positions on. Oh well. Maybe next time.

Um, if that's the same Stephen Lewis from Rio Del who writes letters to the editor frequently, I would guess he's a disingenuous democrat. Kind of like a Richard Nixon Quaker.
Either that or someone who doesn't really have a clue as to what his party is about. I've known a few of them over the years.
One was a Democrat who said he was registered as a Dem cause they were the "party of the working man...". He knew little, if anything, about where they stood on any issues.
And you see a few Democrats at gun shows that don't realize theirs is the party of gun control (not to say there aren't Republicans, like Bush, who support gun control). Gun shows are pretty much Republican country and you'll often hear people running down Democrats at gun shows. It's a fairly common sentiment at those events.
I remember a friend stopped by my LP table at a Redwood Acres gun show years ago. Since mine was a political table, he proceeds to blast the Democrats and then went back to his table. An older couple was standing nearby listening to him. After Bill left, they came up to me and expresses outrage that he could run down the Democrats: "He needs to watch what he's saying...". They were obviously Democrats and had no idea their party was the party that introduce and support the vast majority of gun control bills on the state and national level.
Another attractive young gal came by our table when we were doing petitioning for an initiative to repeal California's Assault Weapon Ban. She stopped by and signed the petition. I asked her if she'd be interested in registering to vote as a Libertarian. She said, "No. I'm very, very proud to be a Democrat..". Amazing. Her party was the one that introduced and passed the Assault Weapons Ban. I wondered if she knew that.
Update: You were right, Jeff. It is the guy from Rio Dell. The Eureka Reporter wrote an article on him in today's paper. It's online at

Yeah, that happens once in a while (me being right :)
I searched the NCJ and the Times Standard for letters that Mr. Lewis has written. This is what I came up with.
This article
And there's a reference in one of Salzman's fake letters on this page
Neither publication appears to have the letters to the editor online.
