What Price For A Garden?

Leo Sears' My Word column yesterday dealt with the fiscal aspects of open space- in this instance community gardens- referring to the big brouhah taking place in Los Angeles over some land currently being used for public gardening.

In this case, while I appreciate Leo's concern for fiscal responsibility, I'm not so sure that's the only consideration that should be taken into account.

This editorial from yesterday's Sacramento Bee has a different take on the issue. I'm not sure just where I stand, but as I've said before, there is something to be said for just a plain old empty lot.

Leo had it wrong in his first sentence when he said Julia Butterfly was removed from a tree on the farm. She was not. This was a widely publicized story. He could have read any number of articles to learn that actress Darryl Hannah was removed from the tree.

The South Central Farm is the largest urbabn farm in the US. It feeds 350 families.

Some things are indeed as important as "fiscal responsibility."

If it was my land, I would start charging them to use it. I would still be paying property taxes and if they wanted to keep it as it is, then cough up some cash.

This isn't a socialist country. These people live in houses, that probably have some areas where they could grow. An apartment complex could find space needed and have a community garden there. Why is it up to someone else to support these people?

I was appalled by Leo Sears editorial regarding the community gardens in Eureka. A little history lesson for Leo: those gardens were put in place to provide gardening space to grow food for the Hmong refugees that immigrated to Eureka. This was also a wonderful way to transition and assimilate into our culture.

Hey, Leo - you can put a lot of houses on all those useless parks. Kids don't need a place to play anyway, and since some developer will make bucks, it's best for everyone. Isn't Leo on a government pension?

Omg,

Leo had the WORST reputation as representing everything that was wrong with govt'l workers, i.e. lazy, undermotivated, condescending to the public etc...many of us in local govt are simply aghast at the absolute hypocritical behavior he has displayed since retiring on his CalPers feathered next.
