Annexation Rears Its Ugly Head Again

Figures.

This is why I often don't vote in city council races. All three Eureka mayoral candidates seem to be in favor of annexing areas just outside of Eureka into Eureka proper. At least Jerry Droz suggested that people in the proposed areas of annexation should have a say in the matter.

In fairness, I'm sure Bass and LeVallee would probably agree.

Still, it would be nice to see someone question the idea of annexation in the first place.

This isn't going to be a zero sum game where the Sheriff's Department gives up enough deputies to the City of Eureka to make up for the larger jurisdiction annexation would create. The Sheriff's Dept. will keep their deputies and Eureka will have to find more cops.

Never mind that Eureka P.D. can't seem to keep a full crew for their current jurisdiction. Same goes with fire and everything else.

And along with annexation, newly annexed Eureka residents get to sign on to Eureka's Utility Users Tax. Sounds like a no- win situation all the way around to me.

Fred: It's part of state law, annexation would require the voter approval of the people being annexed.

I should hope so.

Part of the problem is that these areas just outside the city limits have a tremendous impact on the city with no corresponding contribution to city revenues making the burden on the taxpayers who live within city limits even heavier.

And I think most of those affected would want to be annexed. Better police and fire protection, etc.

How would there be better police and fire protection? We keep hearing how short staffed Eureka P.D. is already.

The City needs to annex areas with services and businesses, not just residences. Ever since Prop 13, residential areas have become a steady drain on municipalities, costing far more in services than property taxes provide. This is the same whether were talking about cities or unincorporated areas.

Myrtletowne has enough business and retail that it would likey pay for itself to annex. Areas like Cutten would kill the city, unless they built some businesses out there to bring in tax dollars to pay for the necessary services.

The fire department response times for EFD versus HFD #1 are way better for EFD. Police response times for EPD versus Sheriffs are better too. Check the stats.

That would make sense as both EPD and EFD have less distance to cover.

I noticed the other day Wikepedia deleted the entry for Fred Mangels. How rude!

If the Plazoid would start participating in the real world rather than whining the homelessness issue may actually be remedied.

Next homelessness task force needs real homeless people rather than cartoon characters like Tad and the other two that were on it.

Hey Nick Bravo

We are planning to visit you in Lincoln, Nebraska. See you soon. :)

12:42 Is that a threat? and who's "we"?

Since it appears that 12:42 has been smoking skunk weed let me clarify in regards to the task force.

As I said in an article in the Eye so long ago. There are various types of homeless people. Ones like Tad and Bio need to be able to live their lives in peace, the police have no right to harass them in regards to their lifestyle choice.

Other homeless want and need to have apartments, jobs, etc. They need the state to help them get back on their feet.

Why isn't anything being done in regards to building a bigger and better endeavor somewhere near Arcata? First Meserve blows the grant money for a new one and then Harmony Grovels tells the paper that she thinks the endeavor should stop feeding people.

Pay attention Grovels! The purpose of the Endeavor is to SERVE FOOD!
They should serve at least 2 meals a day INCLUDING WEEKENDS.

Good Gawd Grovels! I thought Greens were all about social justice! Or do I need to come back and show you how its done?

Please nick, I have failed miserably. Everyday I pray that my incompetence remains hidden, yet it is hidden only to myself. Please Nick...comeback and save Humboldt county from the disease I bring forth in my desperate attempts to seem important.
