Sign Stealing Begins?
Looks like at least some of the campaign sign thieves are out and about now. After my short stint at work yesterday, I drove up in front of my house and noticed the Mary Beth- Wolford sign gone. The others were still there. I didn't noticed if the Wolford sign was gone earlier on, or not.
The other two are still there this morning. I took a look up and down the street and the only other sign that might be missing is the Neely sign a couple house down, across the street. I say might be missing because there's a big car parked between where I was standing and the sign used to be. I walked a little ways down the street and still couldn't see it, though. I'll have to take a closer look later.
Must be just random mischief in this instance, since there doesn't seem to be a political connection- Wolford and Neely being in opposite camps, so to speak.
Last general election, whenever that was, I came out one morning to find my entire yard cleaned out. They took every sign, with no trace to be found. The only other one I noticed gone was a Kaitlin S-P for Water District sign that was on the corner across the street.
I can't help but wonder if they were specifically targeting me, since I seem to be a regular target. Who are the people that do this? It would be nice to catch a few of them, just once, to see who they are. I can't help but wonder what their mindset is?

Maybe they're just looking for fuel for their woodstoves.
Of course, the Eureka Reporter is good for that too.
Oh really? What do you base your statement on? Like the ER would go around steaing signs, but you probably would 9:38. Here it goes again. Attacking the Eureka Reporter because they dared to question Paul Gallegos! Actually it's Gags handlers that are pissed that someone questioned their boy. When your rant and drivel doesn't add up you attack the reporter. Keep it up losers.
The sweetheart deal that little Bowman got, after daddy, via the tribe, donated $10,000 to Gallegos is suspicious at least. It's not like this was little Bowman's first brush with the law! The news media should be asking questions. Gallegos is an elected official and elected officals are supposed to answer to the people! The people and the voters have a right to know. Gallegos needs to be held accountable for his actions, just like any other politician. Even behind the redwood curtain.
"this office operates without fear or favor"
that kind of lame ass crap just begs for follow up questions.
Just a few thoughts. Lets put this Bowman/Gags thing behind us. We can just sit back and wait for the next scandal or issue to come up. Because with Gallegos there will be more. You can count on it. And you can count on the devoted followers, like Eric Kirk, to make excuses and justify everything Gallegos (and the political machine behind him) does.
The only one ranting and driveling is you. And we can always count on more hot air from the neurotically obsessed anti-Gallegos brigade.
for your info 10:02,the reporter provides for a good starter in my fireplace. The old practice in my neighborhood was neighbors picking up the unread papers, then finding a reporter bin in town, and stuffing them back in there.I've since asked folks to leave it,so I can use the paper in my fireplace. It's amazing how many papers are left on the streets here on Pine Hill. It's seriously environmentally degrating. It seems the distributor just dumps them everywhere.Often at the intersection of Higgins and Meyers there's just a bundle of them left in the middle of the road. Most are a few days old.Maybe it's a message to Patty Berg since her home is fairly close to that spot.Don't know what it would be,but it seems funny that of all places to dump,it would happen there.Nice thing about Pine Hill though is there's very few signs up.Some homes across from Pine Hill school on Meyers have some up,and there's a house at Union and Madison that always has signs, but that's really it.They really can uglify a neighborhood.
esquan writes, "and there's a house at Union and Madison that always has signs,".
Funny you should mention them, esquan. I've done some work for them on occasion, although I don't know they've ever told me their names.
Very pleasant folks and BIG TIME Democrats. The guy is some Carpenter's Union Rep.
I noticed last time around they even had a Yes On Measure T sign, which I thought was shameless, it being put up by a union rep. Then again, he must have had some misgivings, too, as he put it on the East side of the house, along Union Street, a ways away from the signs on the front of their house.
"I've since asked folks to leave it,so I can use the paper in my fireplace."
That's where the ER truly belongs!
"It's amazing how many papers are left on the streets here on Pine Hill. It's seriously environmentally degrading. It seems the distributor just dumps them everywhere.Often at the intersection of Higgins and Meyers there's just a bundle of them left in the middle of the road."
Surely it must be illegal for them to dump papers like that.
Every now and then I'll find a stash of Tri- City Weeklys behind some bushes,or some such, that some carrier apparently dumped. I assume the pay's the same whether they deliver them, or not, as long as they don't get caught doing that.
Fred, the yes on T sign has been replaced with Kuhnel,Lavallee,Abrams, and maybe even a Neely sign.Remember sign placement is often determined by the installer, unless otherwise specified by the residents.Signs in that location facing Union are certainly more visible by passersby. That's a nice piece of property there.Real serene.I'm glad they got those folks out who were inhabiting the property, just north of their's(next to the garage, just past Sea ave.)They were totally destroying that property,it was just a dump really. But I wish those folks good fortune, they just lived a messed up lifestyle. But hey,I was driving by one day and noticed that they had some bamboo trees and a bunch of river rock waiting for someone to take. So,I got 2 bamboo trees, and a truck load of river rock. Some dude who was cleaning crap up there helped me load it,then told me to come back for some ferns and more rocks.I went back 2 days later, and everything was gone. The community services district has been out there every day cleaning the property.
Oh. The place down at the bottom of the hill? That was a mess indeed. I was under the impression you lived there. JUST KIDDING!
I was glad to see that mess cleaned up, too.
Talk about another mess up in Pine Hill, there's that place next to the church on Union Street, on the south side. Some guy lived there that took in all kinds of people. Stored trash and old cars in his back yard.
Things came to a head when one of his "guests" was shot and killed there. I knew the girl that lived across the street and used to mow her lawn. She said it was kinda gross as the killer dumped the body in the back of a pick up truck and headed south on Union. She said there was a trail of blood behind the truck as drove off. They followed the blood trail and found the body in that lot to the south west of the school down below Humbold Hill, whatever it's called. South Bay?
Anyway, the neighbors finally had enough and they called some "Neighborhood Something- or- other" from the Sheriff's Office. They ended up forcing a cleanup of the place.
I happened to stop by there when they were working on it. They had the S.W.A.P. crew from the jail doing the cleanup.
I got to talking to the deputy in charge. He was saying the house smelled so bad when the SWAP crew tried to enter they almost couldn't handle it.
They had one of those big dumpsters out front that they were dumping everything in. He said, "See that dumpster there? That's number 12, so far, and there's much more in the back yard...". Apparently there was like ten or twelve abandoned cars in the back yard, along with everything else.
The deputy told me one of the problems was rats from that property going next door and infesting the church.
What a mess. Don't know if the guy still owns it. It looks a little better now. Seems to me, as my friend pointed out earlier, there wasn't an unbroken window in the entire house. Looks like he has windows now.
I blame Faulkna.

Same goes for the ER. I have found piles of the ER in dumpsters and alleyways. The Audit Board of Circulation simply will not audit or certify any free newspaper for precisely this reason, which is why there is no valid comparison between the ER and the TS in that regard.
So the ER is lieing when it claims to have a "higher circulation" than the Times-Standard.
Call the Humboldt Co Dept. of Enviromental Health. They will respond within a day or so to complaints about trash in yards.
Lying? doubt it.
anon.r --- you're still alive!
Unfortunate, isn't it.
Anon.R.mous, you're being irrational. Obviously the ER is lieing when it claims to have a higher circulation. As you know, many of their papers are dumped, trashed, burned, etc. They may print more papers than the T-S, but that does not mean that more people read it than the T-S.
Everybody who pays for a subscription to the T-S likely reads it. In contrast, the ER dumps their papers all over the county and a great many people do not read them. The majority in some areas. They throw it in the trash or apply it to useful purposes, such as tinder for fireplaces and woostoves.
About unwanted Eureka reporter newspapers.....
what ya do is.....
Ya call the eureka reporter on the phone and say that they dumped trash in your yard and you want them to come clean it up.
If they balk, ya say that if they don't clean it up, you'll collect ALL the eureka reporter papers and dump 'em in ROB ARKLEY'S YARD on buhne (and D street).
They will come pick up the papers.
Tell your friends!
2:32 here. The ER is not necessarily lying (I can't say that they are or are not,) but they are making an invalid comparison.
They may print and distribute X number of copies, but that is only one number that advertisers or auditors would consider. To really be able to compare circulation, you would have to know how many papers are picked up by separate consumers, how many of those copies are likely to actually get read, and how likely those readers are to be the target audience for advertisers.
It is impossible to know who picks up the papers from a store or display rack, or to know how many papers that are tossed, unrequested, into driveways actually get read. It is safe to assume, though, that a person does not pay for a newspaper unless they intend to read at least part of it. It is also safe to say that some percentage of people who pick up a free newspaper, either at the news stand or at home, would likely not be willing to actually pay for it.
So, again, the ER can print and distribute as many copies as they like, and they can advertise that number freely, but that does not make it a valid comparison with an actual paid newspaper.
I'll be happy to pay for the Eureka Reporter. Told them that, too.

I said three words and I'm irrational? I seem to be misundering you then.
"the ER can print and distribute as many copies as they like, and they can advertise that number freely, but that does not make it a valid comparison with an actual paid newspaper."
So if they aren't outright lying, at the very least the ER is intentionally misleading people, trying to make it look as if more people read the ER than the T-S, when the opposite is very likely the case.
I'd like to get the Times-Standard printed on ER's thick, white newsprint.
Someone wrote: But hey,I was driving by one day and noticed that they had some bamboo trees and a bunch of river rock waiting for someone to take. So,I got 2 bamboo trees, and a truck load of river rock.
My well-meant warning to all who read these posts: You may rue the day you planted bamboo in your yard. Your neighbors may come to resent it because it will travel over to their yards also. Bamboo takes root and travels underground wherever it wants to go. Bamboo does NOT care where you want it to live.
Wait a few years and see if you can remove it from your yard then. And good luck!
When I moved into my house, it took about six years to get the bamboo under control (to kill it, I mean) and it still pops up every now and then.
Bamboo is an "invasive non-native plant." If you are a member of the Native Plant Society, never admit during the meetings that you planted bamboo in your yard.
It is almost as invasive as Pampas Grass, which has invaded and conquered Redwood Country, more's the pity.

I like that idea! Which house is it, exactly?
(Maybe a few lively bamboo shoots can be included with the papers, as a special bonus.)
Maybe they're just looking for fuel for their woodstoves.

BS. The paper is too thick - it doesn't burn near fast enough to get a fire going quick. The TS and TriCity work much better.

Then it can be rolled up and used as logs!
I didn't see many Wolford signs when I was driving around Eureka today. Coincidence?
Anyway, realtors have to replace signs often, unfortunately. I wouldn't necessarily jump to political conclusions - although the fact that your sign was missing as well as your neighbor's Neely sign may just indicate someone with election fatigue already. What's he or she going to do when the campaigns really get going?
Stock up on kindling for the winter.
Eric, did you see more Wolford signs up,or Eureka Reporters laying in the road or on a sidewalk?
Eric wrote, "I didn't see many Wolford signs when I was driving around Eureka today. Coincidence?".
Well, I don't think they had too many out to begin with. Wolford's campaign manager just e-mailed me saying someone stole one of her big signs that was at Henderson and Broadway.
The deadline for financial filings through Sept. 30 is Thursday. It's going to be interesting reading. See if the "Local Solutions" juggernaut is more than just press releases and the occasional couple hundred dollar contribution. The fact anyone would consider them a "machine" is astounding.
Where Local Solutions makes the difference is with its GOTV efforts. Phone banking and door hangers primarily.
Who is this Virginia Bass X? Some sort of Black Muslim candidate?
