Eureka In Top Ten?
Who'd a thunk it? It's hard for me to imagine Eureka being in the top ten of U.S. travel destinations. I guess I forget how much in awe of the place I was when I moved up here in '73.
Still; I can't help but wonder if these TripAdvisor guys get paid to give you a rating.

We can have this designation for real, it just takes some imagination, and "seeing" what we can offer, not just looking at what we take for granted...
I've been to five of the 10 locations and I don't see how Eureka got included. With all the bums, the meth heads, the Broadway traffic, and the trash. It must be the marijuana?

Maybe the reporter looked past the trash and transient problems and saw the lasting beauty underneath. The wonderful architecture of our houses. The decent, honest people, of whom there are many. The natural beauty of the land and water and sky.

The reporter must be referring to the 1% of old growth redwoods that are left on the planet. Most of those are easily commutable from Eureka. Can you imagine how beautiful Eureka was before the white savages came and destroyed it? Skyscrapers of nature, right up to the bay!

This is a dreamy view of a world that exists mainly in the minds of college and university freshmen, sophomores, and professors.
People everywhere use the resources that are available and sometimes they use too much to sustain long-term settlement. The Anasazi Civilization comes to mind. It lasted hundreds of years on this continent before disappearing for reasons unknown, centuries before "whites" came to their territories.
Not only that, but in the current day, people are being told a lot of lies about how peaceful all indigenous people are and were. The truth is harder to handle, but Truth is that tribes everywhere in the world fight against each other for resources, or for religion, or even for "fun." North American tribes engaged in tribal warfare long before European inflences were felt here. They also engaged in tortures against their enemies as terrifying as any known in modern times.
(I don't know enough about local tribes to be sure whether they were as peaceful and benign as I have heard.)
Here is a suggestion: "Research before Ranting."

Yes, just do your research. The local tribes fought fiercely. The U.S. soldiers at Fort Humboldt spent much of their time seperating warring tribes from killing each other. Research the "Cristmas Prairie" battle between local tribes. People are people. Oh, by the way, the local Yurok and Hupa's used to log redwoods too.

Present day Mexico City was the site of the largest cleanest city in the world when the spanish came and massacred the people. This was during a time when whites would throw their feces out on the streets, little suprise they incurred the plague! In fact, it was the whites own filth and desease that they brought over to kill the Natives. If whites knew how to properly wipe their own asses, the Natives would have so outnumbered the white horde that they would stand no chance.
I encourage people to look up history, and the crimes of genocide perpetrated upon the Natives. One look only across the bay from old town to find the white persons legacy. So be a proud whitey. Yes, its your burden to 'civilize' the world. You are a great race. Virtually no corner of the world has been safe from your grasp!
Your incredible rage is not helping anything or anyone to construct an integration of values and goals to make our world a better place. I ask again, "what are you doing to make a difference"? If all you can do is rant and make a voice that has an effect of being distructive, then are you on a better level than those you accuse of being destroyers? You are using the technologies that are a part of this civilization with expertise, and to broadcast your view. This culture such as it is, is your world. Would you like to go back to the days of living with nature and all of the perils that it demanded. I suspect that you are throughly content to drive cars, shop at stores and live in a society of technical achievements. Again, I ask what are you doing personally to make a constructive difference in todays world.
What I do is none of your concern and off the point. I help Natives. What do you do? My guess is your an artist. Am I right? Go tinker with your wooden boats and your shitty oil paintings. How does that contribute to society?
None of the 'white' acheivements would have been possible without the rape and pillaging of native lands across the globe. Back to the original discussion, nobody in their right mind would find Eureka a top 10 attraction in the U.S. People come here to see the Redwoods. A giant old growth probably existed where you sit your fat white ass down right now! 99% of it is gone, thanks to the white man. Like it or not, hate your own race or not, whitey came to this paradise and robbed it of its true wealth. What replaced it?
