County Librarian Hired

I wonder how many people noticed we haven't had a head librarian in the county for the past eight months? I sure didn't. Even if I had, I'm not sure I would have cared.

This certainly seems to illustrate what a lucrative business government is. Over $89,000 a year and that isn't considered high enough to attract qualified applicants.

I would kill for that kind of money.

Supes keep having closed session re hiring the librarian so maybe there are applicants and they haven't decided yet.

No kidding Fred, that was my first impression:89K?!!? For what? How many days is the library even open? Is filing books expertly worth 89K? How much revenue does the library generate? My kids use the library and enjoy it, but 89K seems ridiculous, especially with benefits...

The news covereage in both the T-S and E/R says they hired some guy from down south.

I'll bet there are a number of people around here that could, and would, do that job for half that amount.

Oh, that's right; They weren't qualified.

Salary scales are completely ridiculous and often have nothing to do with the amount of work one does. In our capitalist society supply and demand determine wages in an ever increasing upward spiral. It's a boom and bust scenario that kills opportunities for local people to move up into local positions which keeps the community intact.

Unlike Fred, I am a Communitarian at heart (the Commie Libertarians)and hope one day people will learn that the most efficient economic system is one that uses local energy sources and resources for local production and consumption. Cooperative community economic and social self-sufficiency in other words.

I only see an ever increasing upward spiral in gov't jobs, especially in gov't administrators. Such jobs are explicitly immune to supply and demand. I don't think it's reasonable to call our society "capitalist" when we have as big a gov't as we have. The gov'ts in the US are comparable in size to those of western Europe, which are routinely called "socialist".

Uh Fred, there are tons and tons of non administrative jobs that pay half as much, in the library and elsewhere. So why don't you go sign up? Well, other than being chronically undereducated (Obviously), you're the kind of person who just likes to moan and bitch. Sure you could have the title and receive a paycheck, but then all we would have for a head librarian is a FUCKING LAWNMOWER MAN. And by your own admission, one who is not very good.

You don't just get to show up and be in charge of the Military Police Fred. You have to work for it. You don't just get 89k in salary a year, you have to work for it. You cant just sign up any old person to be head librarian, thats Jacksonian. Yeah Fred, go pick up a book, and one thats not written by Anne Coulter. See, Jackson was the father of the Spoils system. The most corrupt, inefficient and destructive form of administration we have ever seen. Is that what you advocate? Going back to the spoils system?

Hey Fred, you don't have to kill anyone, you just have to go to all the schools and gain all the experience of someone who becomes head librarian. Remember the old story "Oh Mr. Heifitz, I'd give half my life to play like you do"
"Madam, I did".
Like 1216 said, you just have to work for it. That's one of Humboldt's distinguishing characterstics, it's filled up with lazy mediocrities unwilling or unable to compete, but more than willing to rant about how the system is to blame, the system failed. No, the system has flaws. You are the failures {attention 1038 and JLO, above).

Fred doesn't know what he advocates. He is totally uneducated. He hates government but has never picked up a book to question why.

Makes me wonder why Fred spent such a short amount of time working for Juvenile Hall. Makes you wonder why he worked as Military Police - known for taking some of the most uptight assholes in the army.

Yes, Fred just advocated for the spoils system, but only because he is chronically uneducated. Hopefully this will encourage him to pick up a history book and realize his philosophy on life already got it's time. And it was proven very wrong.

Paying 89k for a librarian, for an under used library seems plain wasteful. How many hours a year will the person work? When the library is closed are there people inside from 9-5? Could an effective library be run by volunteers, docents? To employ someone for 89k, probably costs taxpayers closer to 200k.

We can only blame this on one person. Bonnie Neely, the library is her baby. She got the funding for in its beginning and now she is the board chair for the supes who made this decision to pay someone this much. We can talk of capitalist, communists, socialist, etc. all day long but the blame falls soley at the 4th district (Eureka)supervisors feet. NEELY

Every time I've ever been in the library it has been well used. In fact it really seems to me like we have a pretty small one for the amount of use it gets. Also, if you guys think docents could do a better job, why don't you get off your fat asses and go volunteer? A little experience might just possibly make that kind of claim more credible.
