California #1 In Licensing

The San Francisco Chronicle advises us on a Reason Foundation study that found California requires more job licenses than any other state in the nation. The Wall Street Journal's, John Fund, opines further on the licensing issue.

Let's stop licensing doctors, lawyers and home construction. Yep. That would be a riot.

No - but In the 1950s, only about 4.5% of jobs required a license to work. Today, that proportion is more than 20%. Many of the jobs that require a government stamp of approval don't involve health or safety. Depending on the state, you need a license to be a hair braider, florist, auctioneer, interior designer or even fortune-teller. Many licensing regulations exist only because business interests lobby for them in order to reduce competition. They then often set up oversight boards that protect incumbents in the industry while excluding newcomers some things are ridiculous and unnecessary.

Interesting, Fred.

That's an interesting opinion about why licensing exists. I disagree.

I assume 9:06 is the same person as 8:50. No surprise there, even if they aren't the same people.

There are some that think that every job and every other aspect of our life should be subject to government approval.

They're known as Authoritarians.

No Fred, Commerce is efficient when without lots of checking and verifying, each party in a trade has confidence that the other party is competent to fulfill their obligation.

Thats not authoritarian, that's efficient business and essential to practical capitalism and rule of law. Go to Russia, Iraq or many African countries where no assurances of competence exist and see how difficult it is to effectuate a successful trade.

Since Fred is personally incompetent and unable to qualify for licenses, he doesn't want licensed folks to prevent him from pawning off shoddy work.

How much ya wanna bet, Fred, that this guy thinks you need a license, but the illegal "immigrant" a yard over doesn't?

Rose, your whole premise is that liberals must be hypocrites. But you see hypocrisy because you don't have the intellectual ability to understand that someone can have a valid, reasoned opinion different from yours. And, you ignore the facts while asserting your ideological prejudices.

Illegal immigrant drivers have to have drivers licenses, just like legal immigrants, and get sanctioned by police if they don't. Same for other things they do that require licensing like caregiving.

Of course, if laws aren't enforced they may not be obeyed, but that has nothing to do with licensing or immigration.
