A Look At The MCSD Candidates
The Eureka Reporter takes a look this morning at the six candidates vying for two seats on the Mckinleyville Community Services District. Two are incumbents.
Only two really stand out to me at this point:
Dennis Mayo, of course, but not so much because he's our very own Dennis Mayo. I've read some of his stuff here and elsewhere and the guy definitely has a libertarian streak to him from what I can see.
Adrienne Floureen piques my interest if only because she opposes water fluoridation. Whether she opposes it because of principle or some other reason isn't mentioned. Still, nice to see at least one candidate opposing fluoridation, but her reasons might prove to be a concern once they're known.
At this point it doesn't look like there are any candidates in that race I'd be strongly opposed to. Perhaps Rose or some of the other Mckinleyvillians might give us their take on the candidates?

Can't wait for the forums to see what Daniel Pierce pulls out of his hat. I like him but I don't get why he keeps running. Floureen is considered to be a nutcase.
Four good candidates. Ron and John, both good incumbents, I also like Dennis, and though I don't know much about Helen, everything I hear is good.
We're consistently lucky in the Fifth District to have good candidates. Ron was an especially good catch as an appointee.
Two seats. Too bad.
One good thing - no need for Loco-Solutions/Salzman - I think all of these candidates are smart enough to stay away from them.
I'm wondering if Local Solutions might try and get involved, regardless. If they do, who might they end up endorsing?
Fred and Rose,
I suspect they may be involved in the Harbor District races where Pat Higgins is trying to oust Charles Olivier(sp) and Roy Curless in the 2nd district has two opponents...
Ronnie is unapposed in the 1st.
Regards, Mike Harvey
I was going to say let's see if they try to reconstitute themselves. And what their agenda is this time.
I think Mike probably just hit on it. The Water Boards are immensely valuable to the Salzman/Baykeeper/Ken Miller forces, and that makes them a target for the sleazy politics attempting to win power and influence.
Otherwise, I think Loco-Solutions time has come and gone. Hopefully we can get away from divisive agenda-driven puppet candidates. And I am leaving out alot of colorful descriptive terms in order to be nice here.
Higgins will try to paint Olivier as too old, saying he spends half the meeting reminiscing about the old days, they've already sent that trial ballon up the pipeline.
Higgins'll definitely be a Loco-Solutions candidate.
Then we should all hope that the Humboldt Business Council doesn't drive any puppet candidates either.
Pat Higgins is a wing nut job. I have actually sat down and tried to understand him, but he is NUTS. Its all empty rhetoric, with no substance.
Yes - they want the water board, because the waterboard can now trump local agency and state agency approval...even full and complete EIR's.
But the only reason Higgins shouldn't serve on anything like that is that he is mentally imbalanced.
Why can't my fellow liberals push for someone sane to serve on boards?
Rose: I agree! I can't wait to see what Daniel is hiding in the hat this time!
In one of the candidate forums, two well dressed, well manicured women sitting behind me were talking about Pierce - "He's crazy" but "He's got some good points" and then one said to the other "He is pretty cute, though." Or maybe it was "good looking" but anyway, I thought it was funny. And again - I think he is a nice guy. But this running for office thing, Daniel - what are ya gonna do if ya catch it?
Patrick Higgins has a brilliant mind, I am honored to be acquainted with him and his wife, Diane.
Pat Higgins is a threat to the establishment. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission -- in a show of incompetence -- blamed him for whipping up opposition to the fish killing dams on the Klamath.
Pat does great work for the Klamath, but FERC is just stupid.
"Pat Higgins is a wing nut job. I have actually sat down and tried to understand him, but he is NUTS. Its all empty rhetoric, with no substance."
or...

Knowing Carol's prediliction for wing nuts, I will go with anon's asssement.
Humboldts not only #1 in pot heads it's #1 in wing nuts too.
...because you KNOW how sharp and reliable your old friends the Anonymouses have always been, amd you take every Anonymous Recommendation you are told, don't you? DON'T you?? DON'T YOU!!??
Amazing, attack people before you hear what they have to say. What a bunch of jerks.
I'd like to hear exactly what makes him qualify as a wingnut.
It could be genetics or the bad acid or the government education or the weak social view, etc, etc, etc, etc,
Pierce is the wing-nut in the group - and he's not a funny wing-nut either. During that new years storm 2 years ago Habitat for Humanity had a tree blow down on the fence between their property and Daniel's. The project manager called us to see if we could take it down and we happened to have a backhoe in the area and an employee who said they would donate their time to remove the tree. About halfway through the job, we got a call at the office that the tree was wedged in the fence and a couple of boards were going to get broken in the process of getting the tree off the fence - so I said to go ahead, then pick up a couple at Thomas to replace the ones you break...a few minutes later my brother gets a call from the employee - "there is a crazy guy down here accusing me of falling this tree on his fence and shed and trespassing"...my brother could hear somebody (who turned out to be Daniel Pierce) screaming in the background - my brother thought it sounded like Daniel was going to attack him, and told the employee to get out of there ASAP. We informed Habitat of our dilemma and figured that was the end. A few months later, we get a hand-written letter threatening to sue us for trespassing and ruining his shed...we have not responded. Somehow he has it in his head that we went down there with a backhoe on the weekend to cut down 1 alder tree so it would land on his shed - this is after 95MPH winds and hundreds of trees were blown down all over the county. Don't vote for this creep, pick one of the real candidates.
Fred, I can't belive that you allow for slander on this blog.
The Harbor District is not a "water board". They control the Harbor and also Shelter Cove breakwater area as well as a ship repair shop in Fields Landing - not our "water" like MCSD.
In order to attend a Harbor District meeting, take a "happy pill" as you will become suicidal with Ollivier's blathering.
Oh, the meetings aren't all that bad! The district has a pretty new website (thanks in large part to the sorely missed Jeff Robinson) at humboldtbay.org if anyone wants to scope out the extent of its mission.
First, libel is printed, slander is spoken.
Libel:a false and malicious publication printed for the purpose of defaming a living person
Second, it is not false or malicious, it is the truth. He should be ashamed of himself for hassling people donating their time and equipment for the betterment of the community. The reason that backhoe was in the area because in the days before that, my two brothers and I had driven around McKinleyville clearing felled trees from the various roadways around town. Many people did not have power, and many did not have a way in or out of their neighborhoods. This was at no charge, it was raining like hell and we had the time and equipment to do it. We cleared trees from Airport Road, Murray Road, Highway 101, school road ramp, and we stopped at the corner of sutter and azalea on the advice of a CHP officer because there was a power line across the road. We parked the backhoe at a friends house on sutter, a few blocks from the habitat subdivision.
The reason I posted that was to inform people that he is not a reasonable person. Does that make any sense, a construction company would go out of their way to cut down a single alder tree to hit his shed? He would not even entertain the idea that the wind blew it down. That strikes at the core of his cognitive ability, in my opinion and before people vote, they have a right to know. I used to think he was just a funny stoner, but that incident showed me an angry person who is not able to use common sense and reason to decipher a situation. I would have written it off as a bad day until we got that letter some time later, which showed me he is not living in reality. From time to time he does have good points, but in the field of candidates for MCSD this time, he is out of his league.
Hey, Tim. That was an incredible storm. I'd like to say THANKS!
Those are good points.
all for the glory! actually, we had a pretty good time, a few people offered us coffee, and one guy who had been 'trapped' on his street said, "yea, the cavalry's here!" you're welcome. it's pretty rare when you get a chance to go help out a bunch of people like that and we really felt good about it at the end of the day. We weren't the only ones out there, though. John Frederick was out there sawing up logs too, and Andy and Mike Parker, and a bunch of tweakers getting the wood to sell. That was cool, seeing tweakers pitch in like that.
There were alot of good stories about people pitching in to help each other out. Sounds like you did alot.
Rows and rows of trees down all along the freeway, every street coverd in debris. Daniel would have had to be Rip Van Winkle not to have known what was going on. I'm surprised.
I'm sure it's like that in most small towns, but I think it's one thing that makes McK great. You'll get a guy like Dennis Mayo pulling over to help change your tire. Earlier in the summer the brakes seized on my pickup on 299 in an area with limited cell service. One of our competitors passed by, waved, then about 10 minutes later returned to help us out. I'm still grateful, we were trying to figure out how we were going to get back home. He wouldn't take money.
So ... Tim's right. Pierce is completely out of his tree. But anyone who has been at an MCSD meeting when Floureen was there knows that she is the real nutter of the pack.
Forget flouride, you should hear her talk about cell phones. When she starts raising her voice at the directors and twitching ... yikes. She is a train wreck waiting to happen. Maybe she and Pierce will run together. That would at least be a worthy show.
Nice - "out of his tree" I hope that was on purpose
and please tell me Floureen does not sound like fluorine
Definitions of fluorine on the Web:
* A gaseous element that can be poisonous.
Fluorine, in the form of fluoride, is incorporated into the structure of bone and teeth and provides protection against dental caries; an excess of fluorine may result in fluorosis.
We certainly don't want fluorosis in the district, do we?
I hope her (floureen's) issue is not with fluoride, which would really be an issue with fluorine. that would be too much.
Is a vote for Floureen a vote against fluorine, or the other way around?
Vote for fluoreen!
Since Loco Solutions is a complete creature of the David Cobb/Demockery Limited cult, expect it to be more shrill and less effective in the upcoming election cycles. They won't flinch from dumping on a tried and true union man like Ollivier on the Harbor board just because he ain't PC enough for their whacked agenda. Gosh, he was probably against Measure T! He must be a witch! Burn him!
No doubt in the McKinleyville race they will back the hack Dem who even embarrasses his own party (a tough feat with them), the one and lonely John Corbett, who formally ran the Northcoast Coop into a huge deficit they are only just climbing out of after a mismanaged and way overbudget remodel of the Arcata store. John was also caught carrying on an affair with a Coop Boardmember (you know, the ones supposed to be keeping staff like Corbett honest). Just the kind of slimeball David Cobb loves climbing into bed with.
I don't think you will see loco-solutions trying to insert themselves in the MCSD race, unless Pierce or Flourine buys their line of crap.
like last weeks skunk their smell still lingers---- a grim reminder they are still around
Are you referring to Rodney Brunlinger as the one Corbett was sleeping with on the Co-Op Board? I've heard that one too.
John and Rodney? EWWWWWWW!!!!

David Cobb created local Solutions,Wow!! That sure throws a wrench into Rose's theory. But I suppose he probably created DUHC as well in your world.
No way! No how! Not a chance! Cobb is incapable of creating anything. He is simply a con-man. He can even f#%* up a pancake breakfast. He of course will take credit for anything he can. Even a stinker like local solutions.
Ollivier needs to go.
Why does Ollivier need to go, Pat?
Anyway - re: Cobb and Loco-solutions... It was Salzman and Twombly's "grassroots" charade. Riggs, Huber and Woodworth the figureheads, but Salzman and Twombly out doing the dog'n pony show, pumping their message on KMUD (free airtime for Salzman, almost as good as fake letters), and taking care of the communications.
Where, or if, Cobb fits into the whole thing, I don't know. I didn't see him in there. He has his own deal which may dovetail but is far less malignant. His is sort of ridiculous, like a high school project gone bad. Just my opinion. But they never sleep.
You're absolutly right,Ollivier needs to go! Go right back to work providing balanced and thoughtful guidance for the harbor. Rails, trails, eel grass, oysters, ducks, boats(big and little), Sea Grant research, eco-hostiles,cultural and historic and conservation programs all equal economy. Economy pays the bills and provides for quality of life.
eco-hostiles not withstanding.
Tell me one of Ollivier's accomplishments?
He's got you asking a question on a blog 11:26. No ones asking about you.
I'm sure you'll hear about Ollivier's accomplishments during the campaign. Sad that you don't already know. The many elected officials who actually do their jobs and get no attention or notice... all the attention is given to the one who deserves it least.
