Times- Standard Blasts Schoolduggery

Rather couragous of the Times- Standard to blast Eureka City Schools over what seems to be the squandering of millions of dollars of bond money. It's so non- pc to say anything negative about schools, at least in some circles.

I can't help but wonder if this is just the tip of the iceberg?

It is the tip of the iceberg Fred, and there ain't a snowcones worth of accountability in the entire system...

Notice that despite all the the assertions the money was well spent we never learn where that money actually ended up. Inquiring minds want to know. Did some pockets get lined? Or was it just incompetence? Are the same incompetents still still at work squandering our money? Or the same crooks for that matter.

Well, I have seen some renovation done at a couple elementary schools. Not sure if it was a result of the bond money, or not.

One is the elementary school over near Sequoia Park, the name of which escapes me. The other is the one at the south end of H Street, Grant(?) School.

What I've noticed seemed to be mostly cosmetic construction at the entrances to school. Not sure if there's any functional improvement but, in fairness to the schools, I haven't been inside to find out. I just noticed it while driving by.

Word on the street is Jim Scott, the former superintendent, was playing a shell game with the finances, as well as some possible hanky panky with a subordinate in the school system. Whatever the case, the EHS gym was alleged to be flooded yesterday.

I know that some of the money was to be spent building a cafeteria for Winship Jr. high. Did this ever happen?

If so it would certainly be a worth expenditure of public money

Beforehand the kiddies were having to eat their lunches out in the wind and rain. thats not right

As for Sommervilles nod to the Humboldt Taxpayers league I'll say this , even a broken clock can be right twice a day..

Not you, though, dickhead. Your spring has permanently sprung and the hands have fallen off.

There was construction done at Winship, Grant and Washington schools that I know of.

Knowing next to nothing about the full situation will not stop the intrepid commentators in Humboldt County from crucifying every available target and feeling righteous in so doing.

By the way, what ever happened to Generally Accepted Accounting Practices? They should have kept everything honest and above-board.
Maybe the school district was just following the new Bush-style economic model, sometimes described as "How to Bankrupt the Wealth of a Nation to Enrich your Friends in Two Short Presidential Terms."

Wow! It took 8 whole comments to get the BDS (Bush Derangement Syndrome) take on this progressive generated scandal. When can we expect to be treated to the VRWC (vast right wing conspiracy) explanation?

Very good Pogo. You are learning.

If you can't comment intelligently on the substance of another person's comments, get sarcastic.

Very, very good, Pogo. You are indeed learning.

ECS finances would benefit from a third-party review and NOT by our lame Grand Jury. Are they still paying Sheldon what's-his-name $100K a year to put out a newsletter? Or maybe that's County schools.

Umm, why dont you go and check the FUCKING audit, you morons.

There is no conspiracy. There are audits of the years in question.

No conspiracy huh? Then why can no school officials speak of why Jim Scott left? And why still pay him? Usually when a public servant has sexual relations with a subordinate, who coincidentally gets promoted, he gets his ass canned. Not around here though. Here you get a paid vacation with benefits. After all we had a contract with him, therefore he can do whatever he wants. Is that info in the audits? Of course this is all just rumor, but what if it was true?

OK Loggepole. All right, now you're talking. Have you told Hank Simms about the incident you mention? I'm sure he'll track it down and let us all in on the buzz.

Sheldon what's-his-name was not paid $100k to put out a newsletter. I know because I'm Sheldon.

If you look on the ECS web site, under the Measures S and T link, you'll find financial and performance audits and reports by the Citizens' Oversight Committee of all the work done on Measure S and T projects. Much of the construction was for things you can't see from your truck driving by the school - you know, the infrastructure... heating, plumbing, lighting, electrical upgrades. It's called classroom modernization - go ask a principal to tour a school. Also, there is a huge difference between the planning and cost of private contruction and public construction. Go take a look at Alice Birney, Grant, Lafayette, Washington, Winship (a new multipurpose building w/cafeteria), Zane and Eureka High School.

There is no conspiracy, only people who won't take the time to get all the facts before they form an opinion.
-Sheldon
