Know How The County Can Cut $2M?

The latest subject on the Open Humboldt web site is for ideas on how to shave $2 million from the county's General Fund expenses. No comments there as I write this.

What a silly question. The county doesn't need to cut any money from its budget. The evidence is obvious. They wouldn't be tossing the finished general plan and hosting new (costly) meetings if they were cash-strapped, let alone cash-strapped to the tune of $2 million.

I couldn't find a line item for this so I can't estimate the true cost but I vote we get rid of the Grand Jury, which takes up staff time and hasn't made a valuable recommendation in my memory.

How about eliminating all lawyer staff from the County prosecuting victimless crimes which would also be eliminated, e.g. all drug offenses. Should empty out the jails and clear the court cases by about 90% of overpaid salaries. After that, cut all retirement pays down to what average social security pays so we aren't paying enormous salaries for dead wood.

I suppose that's a good suggestion, but I believe that might be some sort of required government function.

I've also read that they're considered the "watchdog" of local government. I love the watchdog angle but I'll admit I don't recall anything useful coming from the Grand Jury. Maybe we're not paying close enough attention.

Did you post that on their web site? I can't seem to access the two supposed comments that were made there as I write this.
