I'd go with...
1. Mechanical problems that incapacitated everyone on board. This seems the most probable situation.
2. Shot down, probably on accident. I have faint suspicions because of the changing 'facts' we're told about the flight.
It's funny how more people go with the most improbable answer (aliens) than a more likely answer of a government shooting down the plane. If there is intelligent alien life that developed technology and space flight, we simply will never meet that life because we're moving away from other star systems at faster than the speed of light (due to universal expansion).
If we were moving away from other star systems faster than the speed of light we wouldn't be able to see those stars. We're able to see those stars because their light reaches us, which it wouldn't be able to if we were moving away from those star sytems faster than the speed of light.
Hmmmm??? Good point.
