15mph Near Schools?
KIEM TV reported last night that the Board of Supervisors will consider lowering the speed limit near schools to fifteen miles an hour. I believe the speed limit in most those areas now is 25, when children are present. I have to wonder who is pushing this?
We don't have school kids being run over every week around here. In fact, I can't recall any school kids being hit by cars, with the exception of the teenager injured on H or I street near Eureka High School a couple or three years ago. Should we reduce the speed limit on H and I streets to 15mph because of that?
The current speed limits around school zones are fine. This is a solution in search of a problem. The Board of Supes should reject it.

I wonder who's proposing it and why.
15 MPH is a ruse for a speed trap. It also gives students a false sense of security - which they don't really need.
" wonder who's proposing it and why."
I can't help but wonder if it's the same people we hear from now and then proposing 25mph speed limits for the entire town?
" It also gives students a false sense of security - which they don't really need."
I would think so. The same sort of "safety" improvements that give other pedestrians that false sense of security. Then they don't feel the need to be careful crossing the street. I see it fairly often now and again with adults walking across streets without really looking. Why should they? Drivers are supposed to stop!
I quipped here years ago, after they shut off J Street at Eureka High School during school hours, is this one more thing kids won't learn in school now: Looking both ways before crossing the street?
I see they've opened J Street during school hours. Wonder what brought that about? They still have that one street near St. Bernard's closed during school hours.
Try driving 25 mph in a school zone and find out how many people behind you honk and tailgate. 15 mph ought to bring out the best in some of those folks.
I drive 25 in at least a couple school zones regularly, and that's even with children not present. I've never had a problem, although I'll admit I'm usually the only one driving.
BTW; from the KIEM text article: "Stretches of road within 500 ft to one thousand ft of a school would be lowered to 25 mph.".
Notice it seems to be not just the actual current zones. They want to go 1000ft (300+ yards) out and lower the limit to 25. Fits in with my thinking it's the 25 mph Club folks that are behind this.
I drove by Grant and Pine Hill schools a short time ago. Not much traffic to speak of, if any. Grant School does have a speed bump out front.
As far as I'm concerned, 15mph is just too slow. There's no need for that sort of speed limit. 25 is fine.
