CCPOA Back Angelides

Who'da thunk it? But seriously, no surprise that the California Correctional Peace Officers Association would endorse Phil Angelides for Governor.

The question I broached the other day was whether Angelides would actually seek their nomination, or not seek it as he'd probably get it whether he wanted it or not. The CCPOA has a rather sordid reputation among many in this state. I felt it might be a good idea not to seek it, if only to keep his distance from them. Since he didn't seek the nomination, he could always use that fact to claim no allegience.

Schwarzenegger didn't bother trying to get it. Looks like Angelides asked for it, if only because they gave the endorsement after he spoke at a big meeting the CCPOA had. Next question is, will this help him or hurt him overall?

Hard to say. Many people, and I suspect some on the Left as well, aren't exactly enamored of the CCPOA- the CCPOA being at least one of the proponents of more prisons being built. That said, most of the pundits seem to think the endorsement will be a boost for Angiledes, with their potential of millions of dollars to be added to the attacks on Schwarzenegger.

Myself? I naturally see the endorsement as a strike against Angiledes. I only hope a lot of others see it the same way.

The Sacramento Bee's, Dan Weintraub, comments on the CCPOA endorsement here (Sept 6 posting). His last paragraph makes the best point, imo.

It was pretty much the only group who enthusiaticly supported Grey Davis in the recall.
