Eureka Reporter Gives Times- Standard A Plug

Not often that you see our local papers giving the opposing paper's reporters a plug. Isn't that our very own James Faulk, from the Times- Standard, in the background?

This is the first time I added an image this way. Usually I upload the image to blogspot. This time I just copied the image location and inserted it into the Image Location block in the image window. To get the image location, just place your cursor over the image, right click and select Save Image Location. The url is then on your clipboard and you can paste it where needed.

Only problem with this method is it relies on the web site the image is on being up and running for the image to show.

Two problems.

#1 You're using the Eureka Reporter's bandwidth without consent. If they're smart, they'll block off-site linking like you're doing here.

#2 The Eureka Reporter now knows the IP address of every person visiting your blog Every time a person loads your page, that image retrieval from the Eureka Reporter's web site is recorded in the newspaper's server log. It would be easy for them to gather some rough data about the users who visit here.

I've received e-mails from Fred in the past, so I know he has a persistent IP address. Until he changes Internet providers, he has the same ID number. If I toss his ID into a database and cross reference it with my web site traffic log, I can generate a report that shows me every visit he makes to my web site. It's extremely easy. Throw away any notion that you're anonymous online.

IN THEORY it would be easy for them to gather data from their server log, but I don't think the web folks are too sharp over there. They haven't even figured out how to fix the problem that any web visitors who go to http://eurekareporter.com still see an "Under construction" default page. If they don't know to then try http://www.eurekareporter.com, they won't be visiting the site.

I even sent an email to their webmaster. Nada. It's been at least a year and they haven't fixed it yet.

Maybe it's one of those deals where they paid a company to set it up and haven't really looked at it since.

Thanks. Hadn't thought of that, but maybe Eureka Reporter wouldn't mind the hits? It will make them look more popular.

Actually, I tried to save the image to my hard drive, like I always do, but it would work the two times I tried it.

As far as information on visitors, my hit counter does that too, so those of you anons out there...we know who you are! Well...at least a few things about where visitors to the blog are from and such.

I meant it wouldN'T work the two times I tried.

Yet another correction: I could download the image but the upload to blogspot wouldn't work for whatever reason, so I just linked to the location.

That's all right Fred. We don't mind everyone knowing we are on your page or that the Eurek Reporter might figure it out and print what we thought was posted anonymously-it isn't like we are saying stuf that we wouldn't say out loud in public right??

Arkley's campaign contributions are already reaping benefits for his newspaper's ability to get the big interview.

Congrats!

buhne tribune does it
but then again, buhne tribune has a "special" relationship with the Eureka Reporter.

Don't you just love how the Eureka Reporter headline says: "Complaint filed over Bass' trip on business owner's airplane"

"business owner"???

that them there's an Arkly dagnabbit!

what a crock of crap the E.R. is.

The arkleys and their criminal friends deserve a jail cell.

cherie arkley could design it like auschwitz.. I mean, the new Co-Op.

CO-OP is the ugliest building in Eureka. I like the look of the freight cars on the balloon tract better than that ugly piece of crap.

You elected , Lavallee and Bass so , that's what you get !

Fred, you need a photobucket account.

photobucket.com

Fred,
Why not download the graphics to your hard drive and then upload them to blogger when posting? After they are on your blog move them to the trash. Voila! No bandwidth theft and no clutter on your hard drive.

you guys are making me feel inadequate, I don't even know what "bandwith" is !

At 1:57 PM, Blogger Fred Mangels said...

That's what I usually do, and tried to do this time- twice.

Downloading the pic was no problem, but when I tried to upload it, blogspot just sat there for minutes saying it was being uploaded. It never finished, so I gave up and tried just using the location, especially since I'd never done that before.

Heraldo suggested I open a photobucket account, but I already have one. It never occured to me to put the picture there and link to it.

Try this:

imageshack.us

Its free, and its better than photobucket. you dont need an account. Perfect for blogs.

I agree. The Starbucks building and the Co-op building have the same gaudy colors that resemble strip malls in the valley. Tacky to the extreme, and completely out-of-sinc with the historic nature of Old Town. What a shame. Imagine the number of people involved in these projects from the private sector planners to the city approvers. You have to wonder what's going on in Eureka.

You were experiencing a blogger glitch which is quite common as they are moving all accounts to "beta".

At 2:24 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

9:26, I complained about the www. or no .www to the Reporter, too. You'd think with a gajillion dollars they could hire one person who understands a web server.

At 2:31 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The history of Old Town is whore houses, bars, drunks, and junkies!

You said it! Maybe it was designed by a committee of kindergarteners. It looks as if it were made of children's toy blocks. The pastel colors enhance the effect. YUCK. I'm embarassed to shop there. It will make my car look bad.

OOPS. I just remembered the County Jail. No other building in Eureka, even the Co-op, is THAT ugly!

At 3:04 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No, the jail is big and ugly, but it's not brightly painted. The Co-Op and Starbucks scream and poke you in the eye to get your attention.

At 3:18 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yet the CoOp and Starbucks are not visible for miles through the fog.

Try coming from Arcata on a foggy morning using the salmon colored jail as your landmark to zero in on your direction of travel-if this is the preferred experience for your posters Fred-they should move closer to Pelican Bay!

Now I have to disable images before reading Fred's blog. Bummer. Don't be a Reporter stooge. Don't rat us out to The Man.

At 4:05 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

While the jail is hideous, at least it doesn't have neon.

You can see the co-op from half a dozen blocks away easily.

At 4:33 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Does anyone know who the Architect was for the Co-op project? Who in their right mind picked out those colors?

We got used to the goddawful jail multi color puke paintjob we can used to the CoOp too. At least it doesn't glow in the dark.

At 5:34 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I AM VOTING FOR NANCY FLEMMING!
At least she has good taste and wishes to paint the pukey jail as one of her top priorities as 4th Dist Supervisor!

Ok that wasn't in her 10 POINT Plan, but she probably doesn't like the color of the jail!

Do you actually think anyone associated with EPD or the co-op is in their right mind?

Jump over to Buhne (sorry Fred) His blog about James Faulk and the governator almost made me fall out of my chair laughing!
