Greenhut's Predictions?

I'd call it a wish list rather than predictions. The Orange County Register's, Steve Greenhut, one of my favorite columnists, lists three things he'd like to see happen in the state in 2007.

His first item, Independent Police Commissions, which I assume are the same as Civilian Police Review Boards, I'm ambivalent about. I'll go along with the other two.

I actually hadn't ever really tried to prioritize things I'd like to see happen on the local, state and federal level. I think I'll just let Steve do the work for me on this one.

How can a ""Libertarian"" be ambivalent about civilian control of the military and reasonable limits on the excesses of government power?

As I told Greg Allen some time ago, I don't necessarily have a problem with Civilian Review Boards, the question is how much power they should have.

Since then I've become much more ambivalent on the issue, mostly a result of the cop hater comments on these blogs. Hard to see how you could avoid getting people with an cop- hating agenda on a review board.

That said, I suppose it could be done.

What's the criteria for being a card-carrying "cop hater?" It seems to be a term directed at anyone who fails to buy the police version (and justification) of every shooting.

I suppose a "cop hater" would be anyone who calls the police "murderers" before knowing the facts, or refusing to accept facts which contradict his preconceived attitudes.

The first part makes sense, but who determines the facts?

Pogo gave you a very good description.

Here's something I have noticed about cop haters.

A cop hater listens to the earliest and wildest allegations against the police after a police incident. Then when the official inquiries do not support those wild allegations, the cop hater insists that there is a cover-up in progress! The cop hater's belief in "the cover-up" then justifies the cop hater's belief that "the system is corrupt."

One thing I've noticed about cop defenders is that they blindly believe every word of the police and immediately attack anyone who thinks the cops are less than perfect.

Fred, just turn in your damn Libertarian voting card already. Youre not fooling anyone. Every time you drop a hint or reminder youre a third party man the more people will realize you are not! Oh yeah, and what's your opinion on crab grass?

Wrong 1:42. I'm a cop defender but I don't blindly believe every word of the police. I'm glad there are still people who are willing to do the policing. I sure as hell wasn't and neither are most of us. I say thank God for the cops, most of whom I believe are good. The bad cops should be punnished to the fullest extent of the law.

Nick Bravo is returning to Humboldt County. Please go to www.greyhound.com/BravoDeBusso for live updates of Nicholas' progress. We have purchased him two seats per bus as a security precaution, and he will have a 72 hour journey.

We wish Nick the best and continue to search for proper accomodations for our returned Dark Lord.
