DSL Outage? No Blogging Today

Did it just happen to me? Got up at five this morning and turned on the computer. Couldn't connect to the internet. Rebooted and checked the computer and still couldn't connect. DSL modem showed everything working so I tried connecting using dial- up. Nope. That didn't work, either.

Even tried using the laptop, although at that point I was pretty sure it wasn't a problem on my end and, as I suspected, got nowhere with that.

So what do you do when you wake up and your morning routine is ruined? I needed to wash the dishes and I suppose I could have but I'd have had to turn on the lights to do that. I gave up and about 5:45 went back to bed. Had fun snoozing but finally got up at around 6:45 and gave the internet another try and it was up and running.

Problem at that point was I was two hours behind schedule so I had to condense my computer work schedule. Most important thing each morning is entering my sweepstakes. That takes from 45 minutes to an hour and a half.

Did a brief news check and then zipped through my sweeps.
I'm running two hours late. Didn't have time to check out all the blogs or do any lengthy blogging myself and no way I'll be able to fly my morning hour up in Aces High. I need to get to work, especially since the month is almost over.

So, for my blog post today, I'll post something in the spirit of Eric's Sohum Parlance movie posts. See if you agree with what
this guy says are the 100 scariest movie scenes. Too bad the guy couldn't have provided video clips of all of them.

I didn't have time to check out more than five or so but I'm sure I could come up with some scarier ones if I gave it some thought.

As I write this, I see the link to Aces High isn't working and, checking the game quickly, looks like it's down, too.

I guess I'm not the only one having problems.

Could you provide a list of the sweepstakes you enter. The only ones I can find on the net are advertisements with more advertisements.

My main sweeps site is www.hypersweep.com. It is a pay site, but I feel it's well worth it as it's well maintained and posts new sweeps pretty much every day. I've been with that site since back when it was a free site. I believe hypersweep offers a free one week trial.

www.sweepstakestoday.com is my secondary sweeps site. It's a free one.

You might want to check out sweepstakesonline.com(?). That was an old one I was with for a few years. It turned into a pay site but I quit when they raised the annual fee.

It used to be ok, even when it was free. Then the guy got worse and worse about posting new sweeps and he never responded to inquiries. It seemed like he'd post maybe only five or ten new sweeps a week, if that. Then he had the nerve to raise his fee from $35 to $50 a year, despite the deteriorating service.

I dropped that site like a bad habit.

I didn't see it on the website, but I think Jack Nicholson in The Shining is one of the scariest scenes after he says, "Here's Johnny-". I can't finish the movie.

Also Johnny Depp in The Libertine is scary as his character's disease progresses. I couldn't watch the rest of the movie.

Quit cutting and pasting other peoples' articles Nick, you prove nothing but your own desperate need for attention.

Jack Nicholson is one of the movies there. I you go back to the site look for Jack looking through the opening in the door he chopped.

Psycho was scary the first time around because they had images you didn't know you were seeing that were causing fright. Saw it on TV and it just wasn't the same as the original viewing.

Fred, sorry to further hijack this already highjacked thread but is there a thread I missed about sweepstakes? Do you enter them every day and do you ever win? If so, what have you won? I'm curious because this seems like an unusual hobby...

Yes, I enter my sweeps every day, so long as I can get online. And, yes, I do win every now and then.

First decent win I got entering sweeps online was a Canon Personal Copier. Only worth a bit over $100 bought at the store, but it was actually a great prize. I don't have to worry about going somewhere to make copies of things anymore.

Biggest win, so far, was the Alienware computer I'm using as I write this. Won that in a one- time entry- only sweeps three or so years ago.

I actually/ supposedly won another computer before that, but it seemed like a shady deal. Apparently they don't notify winners. You have to go to their site, see your name on the winner list and respond.

Well, I did respond but got a "Mailbox Full" message. After about three weeks I finally got hold of them but they said it was past the deadline for claiming the prize. Sooo bogus. I dropped that site like a bad habit. That was Stop2Win.com, to throw some dirt on someone.

I've won all kinds of smaller prizes too. Too many to remember, actually. Some are just consolation type prizes and some are odds and ends, some of which can be useful.

Biggest cash prize: $100 from an instant win sweeps sponsored by Polaroid.

Latest wins, from a couple weeks ago- two wins in two days- was $50 "Gas Cash" (not sure just what that will end up being but I assume it's some kind of coupon for gas, or some such), and I also won some food items from Natural(?) Valley Foods, along with some coupons for their products among other things.

Hey, may not seem like much, but a win's a win.

An unusual hobby, perhaps, but it's really the only hope for someone in my situation. My only hope for finally winning the Big 'Un.

Sometimes I really wonder why I spend so much time doing it as it seems like a waste of time, for the most part. But, when you get a decent win, like this Alienware computer, it seems like it is well worth the time. I couldn't have afforded this Alienware even if my situation wasn't so desparate.

But, when I think of how many hours I spend doing it, I'd probably be a lot better off if I spent that time at a part time job or something.

Still, what else would I do when I get up at 5:00 in the morning?

Fred, judging by the length of your post and the excited gleam in your eye I am going to have to say you probably have a gambling problem. How often are you over at Blue Lake?

At 6:28 AM, Blogger Fred Mangels said...

Nope. Never been to any casinos, at least the local indian ones.

Never gamble with money. Sweeps aren't a gamble because they cost nothing to enter, with the exception of the annual fee for subscribing to hypersweep.com with is a whopping $6.00.

Costs more for new subscribers. I'm one of the ones who was with hypersweep long before it became a pay site and, apparently, the old timers get a preferential rate.

I hope you win the jackpot, Fred!
