Humboldt Illegals On The Run

In the almost thirty four years I've lived up here, this is the first time I can recall hearing of an illegal immigration sweep. Hmm... I wonder why? Happens fairly often in Southern California.

I worked at the Costa Mesa Car Wash in Orange County just before I moved up here. I wasn't there the day it happened but my roommate, who also worked there, was there when a border patrol bus drove into the car wash and nearly the entire car wash crew took off a runnin'.

I've always been surprised at the number of hispanics in Humboldt County. Don't know why. I guess it's probably just because we're so far from the border. Then again, I suppose it would make sense, if you're in the country illegally, to get as far from the border as possible.

I'd never really thought about how many of the Mexicans in Humboldt might be illegal. I usually just figured if you run into a Mexican that speaks little or no english, he's probably illegal. Not sure if that's a valid way to tell but I know some people seem to be able to recognize illegals just by appearence.

I was speaking to Benita Roman at Roman's Restaurant a few years ago. She and her husband moved up here from Mexico probably thirty years ago. We were talking about the legal vs. illegal thing, probably cause I kidded them now and then about sneaking over the border. They didn't sneak, though.

She was telling me about all the illegals up here. She referred to that place at the Bayshore Mall, the ??????? Saloon (the name escapes me right now). It closed down a few years ago. She said something like,
"Fred, you know all those people working at the ******* Saloon? They're all illegal....". She didn't seem to approve of people being here illegally.

It didn't occur to me to ask just how she could tell they were illegal.

I guy I worked with at the Humboldt Bay Power Plant was raised in Texas. He was saying the Border Patrol could often spot illegals just by appearance. He'd say the Border Patrol would come into a bar, look around, and then head for a certain group of Mexicans. Somehow they could tell.

Anyway, I wonder if this raid was just a once every 30 or so year thing, or will we be seeing more of it in the future?
**********
Some people might be curious how I feel about immigration, the Libertarian Party being one that advocates open border policies. Well, I'm not an open borders libertarian. Sure, I might agree with that libertarian mantra that peaceful people should be allowed to immigrate and emigrate freely, but there's more to it than that as far as I'm concerned.

I'm not sure just how immigration policy should work, but there should be some control over who or what comes into the country. Besides, isn't that how Mexico ended up losing California and Texas? They let too many gringos immigrate?

There needs to be controls, but I am upset with the idea of a fence. We asked Gorbachev to tear down that wall. The Berlin Wall and the Great Wall of China have always represented bad things to me.

Then you have this immigration/amnesty bill which once again screws all the people waiting in line to come in legally. The bill ought to move them to the head of the line, then deal with the rest, and deport all illegals who have real criminal records (ie: not traffic stops, but assault, etc.)

Still, this roundup does make your heart go oout to the families.

Indeed. If you leave out the legal questions in this, these were just people trying to go about their lives, working and sending their kids to school.

Then all of the sudden their world gets turned upside down, not because they bothered anyone else but just because they weren't supposed to be here in the first place.

Thing is, if you went to Mexico, you would be treated worse. Other countries, too. Still sad, but a matter of perspective.

It's happening elsewhere, too.

Fred, the biggest problem with immigration lies within companies who hire illegals specifically to avoid taxes. We have a few locally I could mention.NAFTA has done so much damage to folks living on both sides of the border by guaranteeing the proliferation of low wage employment. And don't buy this crap that Mexican cartels are running the pot market here.
But this whole thing sure looks like a sweep to me,and I wonder if some Palco execs were paid some money to provide some leaks into some former undocumented workers.
I used to see these sweeps happen in the bay area fairly regularly, and always thought that the intentions behind them were suspicious. These sweeps are costly ventures to taxpayers, and not to mention the potential lawsuits they can arise after.

What taxes do local employers avoid by hiring illegals? Only an employer working people under the table is trying to avoid taxes and I got news for you A LOT of those employers are not targeting illegal immigrants. There are plenty of under the table workers in this town as there are in other places BUT if you are talking about local businesses with high hispanic ratios like Sun Valley, I assure you, they are following the letter of the law. Know why? Because they are one of the first businesses immigration agents go. They pay taxes on those employees. It is true that some of those employees have fake SSN numbers, fake green cards but it is not a businesses job to determine their validity only to determine if they have the appropriate paperwork.
Occassionally that employer, and others, find out their employee duped them and they are sent on their way. Funny thing is, the government could investigate all illegal SSN uses because they know that someone in conneticut cannot be working as a CEO full time as he works full time in a central valley garlic farm ... but it just keeps those extra taxes and usually does nothing about it. They don't even lift a finger to clear the CEO's credit report or anything, we are all just left to our own defenses

Two or three years ago, when we were down at the welfare office applying for MediCal, they did a check on our social security numbers and/ or status. It came back with my number assigned to me and other guy with a hispanic name.

The welfare guy just pointed it out to me and said I might want to check with social security about it. He didn't seem all that concerned with it himself.

Don't you think its just a tad bit unfair that out of all the people in the world that want to move here for a better life, we have given defacto preference to ones living in Mexico? What about Bolivians, Taiwanese, Samoans, or Egyptians??? The policy is fucked and most of these illegals need to be sent home immediately. Then and only then can we focus on immigration reform and provide equal access to people, whether they're from Canada, Mexico, or Antarctica.

KFMI used to give away undated tickets to comedy night at Sweet River. We scored some 60 tickets over a couple months and most of our dorm attended. The jokes were _lame_.

Gee, the entertainment at a shopping mall restaurant was lame?

Hey Fred, the Mexicans were here before English-speakers showed up, and these territories were stolen from Mexico.

At 6:47 AM, Blogger Pogo said...

wally:"...these territories were stolen from Mexico."

As a result of the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the U.S. obtained the territories in exchange for US$15 million (1848 GOLD dollars). The United States also agreed to take over $3.25 million in debts Mexico owed to American citizens. Allowing for currency inflation the sum was not insubstantial, especially in view of the per acre price of desert land in 1848 but leftists and mexican irredentists are fond of calling it "theft". If it were "theft", why was the captured territory of Baja California returned to Mexico?

Sure- we all got the right to search for a better life.
But if I go to another country to live it, I'm gonna do it legally.

I may even see the logic in learning their language.

If country 'A' wont take you, try county 'B' and so on.

WHY would you want to live as an illegal citizen anywhere, and then subject your children to it?

I realize things are not that simple, but how many of these people ever even TRIED the legal
route?

At 11:04 AM, Blogger ΛΕΟΝΙΔΑΣ said...

We went the legal route with my wife and the INS bureaucrats tried for 2 months to deny her a green card. None of them spoke understandable English and I had to help them out by translating our answers into Spanish. They exhibited more than their usual hostility to ourselves and the two Brits who were the only other caucasians in a roomful of 200 applicants. Anyone who doesn't believe that the times they are a changi'n needs to read the following quotes:here

"They're afraid we're going to take over the governmental institutions and other institutions. They're right. We will take them over . . . We are here to stay."
Richard Alatorre, Los Angeles City Council.

"The American Southwest seems to be slowly returning to the jurisdiction of Mexico without firing a single shot."
Excelsior, the national newspaper of Mexico

"We have an aging white America. They are not making babies. They are dying. The explosion is in our population… I love it. They are shitting in their pants with fear. I love it."
Professor Jose Angel Gutierrez, University of Texas

"Remember 187--proposition to deny taxpayer funds for services to non-citizens--was the last gasp of white America in California."
Art Torres.

"We are politicizing every single one of these new citizens that are becoming citizens of this country . . . I gotta tell you that a lot of people are saying, "I'm going to go out there and vote because I want to pay them back."
Gloria Molina, Los Angeles County Supervisor,

California is going to be a Hispanic state. Anyone who doesn't like it should leave."
Mario Obledo, California Coalition of Hispanic Organizations and California State Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare under Governor Jerry Brown

"We are practicing 'La Reconquista' in California."
Jose Pescador Osuna, Mexican Consul General,

"We need to avoid a white backlash by using codes understood by Latinos . . . "
Professor Fernando Guerra, Loyola Marymount University

Gee its good to be reminded that Fred's on welfare. And by the way he disagrees with libertarianism when it might encroach on HIS welfare payments.

Worried that more immigrants to share the public trough with will cut your share, Fred? Can you call that self-serving, greedy and selfish?

At 12:52 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well then TeenChallenge would also conflict with Fred's desires as it may"encroach on HIS welfare payments.
Seems to me that Fred actually supports that facility(unfortunately).Fred works for a living and has a wife in need of medical assistance,so lay off the dude will ya?

Look at those quotes YOU posted again!

for example:
"We have an aging white America. They are not making babies. They are dying. The explosion is in our population… I love it. They are shitting in their pants with fear. I love it."

Wow. How nice. And you have the nerve to say I need to medicate?

So the Mexican answer is to overpopulate and overrun?

Now theres a real intelligent approach! I can feel the love and understanding now!

Oh, by the way, having a few generations of MY family born and raised in California, something tells me we arent going to be handing it over to people from ANOTHER sovereign nation anytime soon!

Sounds to me like those 'nice' folks you quote are declaring war. Well, you will have one, sir.

9:48 AM Allow me to help you out here. Those were QUOTES. Read the post carefully. The authors are hispanic subversives. Leonidas is a 3rd generation native Californian ANGLO whose wife is a Swedish legal resident of the US. The INS office where her green card was issued is Miami.

We will assume that your ignorance of Africa matches your unfamiliarity with other subjects.

The Spanish are white, but I'm not sure what Anonymous's point was.

At 2:55 PM, Blogger Pogo said...

cpr:""Pogo"[...] is equally unburdened by knowledge of history."

The above is a non sequitur as cpr does not cite any data to support his/her/its assertion. But then cpr appears to excel at such nonsense. He/she/it/ is, however correct in noting that "The Spanish are white..."

At 4:09 PM, Blogger Joel Mielke said...

Where to start with "Pogo"?

"He/she/it" begins by claiming that Mexico was purchased in good faith by the US, and then when his assertion is countered, he says that stealing Mexico was justified because the Mexicans somehow "stole" Mexico from the Spanish who had taken it from the indigenous people.

when "He/she/it" is shown to be incorrect, he simply changes the argument.

At 5:13 PM, Blogger Pogo said...

Where does ANYONE state that "Mexico was purchased in good faith by the US"?
As He/she/it= cpr, the following statement is mostly correct: "...when "He/she/it" is shown to be incorrect, he simply changes the argument." If you substituted "ignorant" for incorrect you would be spot on.

At 8:15 AM, Blogger Joel Mielke said...

There must be more than one "Pogo." I would advise this one to go back and read the first comment of the other "Pogo."

Whether "Pogo" is incorrect due to rank ignorance or willful stupidity is no concern of mine.

At 11:03 AM, Blogger Pogo said...

OK CPR, here is a redux of Pogo's first comment in response to "wally mart":
wally:"...these territories were stolen from Mexico."

If it were "theft", why was the captured territory of Baja California returned to Mexico?"
6:47 AM

Tell us what part of the comment is "incorrect" and cite your sources.

At 1:09 PM, Blogger Joel Mielke said...

"Pogo" limited selection of "facts" is not disputed here, but his claim that this transaction was not theft because the US unilaterally decided that a fair ("not insubstantial") price was being offered to the vanquished Mexico is fatuous.

"Gosh, we even gave them back Baja California" (which was viewed, at the time, as virtually worthless). "Pogo" cites this generosity as some sort of proof that Mexico's northern territories had not been stolen.

At 3:27 PM, Blogger Pogo said...

As usual CPR tries to obscure a lack of facts by relying on his OPINIONS (which appear to be on the level of those foisted on the hapless pupils in a government middle school) by characterizing an event as "theft" which does not fit the proper definition. For some enlightening reading Pogo would recommend CPR peruse: Nunis, Doyce B., Jr. (editor). THE MEXICAN WAR IN BAJA CALIFORNIA. Captain Henry W. Halleck Concerning His Expeditions in Lower California,1846-1848. Introduced and Edited by Doyce B. Nunis, Jr. Volume 39 in Dawson's Baja California Travel Series. Or if that proves overly difficult CPR might see this on the Treaty NEGOTIATIONS.

At 4:19 PM, Blogger Joel Mielke said...

"Pogo" apparently does not understand what I meant when I wrote that the facts are not disputed. in fact, he then goes on to reference yet more history.

There may yet be a place for "Pogo" in the Bush administration.
