Grocery Bills Might Go Even Higher

With grocery bills already climbing upward, it looks like some of us might have and extra $2.00 added to our tab under some proposed legislation. Not satisfied with forcing grocery stores to provide containers for used disposable plastic bags, there's a movement afoot in Sacramento to add a twenty five cent fee on all disposable shopping bags- paper or plastic.

The fee is capped at $2.00, at least for starters. Wonder how long that will last? We've seen with tobacco and liquor how a small tax ends up going up astronomically over time.

Astounding that at least some in Sacramento could care less how high grocery bills go. Goes to show the truth to that old saying that if you give someone an inch, they'll try and take a mile.

As always, if asked for a login to the Sacramento Bee site, you can use humboldtlib for the username and blogspot for the password.

Do you think food stamps will cover the cost of bags?

Or will Social Services provide reusable cloth bags to every welfare recipient?

(because I know how concerned Fred is about welfare recipient ;)

Actually, I think the news article said that the fee won't apply to those on government food programs.

You can't help but wonder just how this would work, though. It seems to me it would be difficult for a checker at Winco to not only keep ring up the food totals for customers but also have to keep track of how many bags they'd be using.

Bring your own bag?

as the dollar gets weaker, EVERYTHING becomes more expensive.....

i bought my first house for $40ooo, now it worth $200ooo, just 10 years later. gold was $400 an ounce just 10 years ago. a barrell of oil was $11 in 1998.

our country doesnt produce, it consumes. how long could that last before prices rise?

In other words, the magnanimous state government will allow the retailer to retain 5-10 cents of the quarter it collects from the hapless shopper. These guys are more and more creative in stealing the people's cash.

In typical "progressive" parlance, the shopping bags have heretofore been "free". As if the retailers did not have to add their cost to the bottom line of what the consumers pay at checkout.

The bill for the true cost of the government skool system is coming due.

I see you noticed that, too. Retailers will now get to charge more for something they always charged for. We've always paid for the bags as part of our purchase, we just don't notice it. No wonder some retailers support it.

i voted for a guy who cut the value of the dollar IN HALF in less than 8 years(GWB), so i dont have much room to complain about the cost of ANYTHING.....

Come now, exrepub; you cant be old enough to have voted for Woodrow Wilson, the fellow on whose watch the Federal Reserve and the "progressive" income tax were put in place. The inflation rate during the last 8.5 years is nowhere near that of the late Nixon and entire Carter administrations which reached 18%+ in early 1980.

The dollar has lost 95% of its value since 1900.

the value of the US dollar is lower now than 1980 and has been dropping steadily since 2001. in 1980, the log value for the dollar was 4.5, now it is less than 4.3. in 2001, it was over 4.7........these numbers are from the Log Nominal Value(US Dollar vs. Major Currencies........2 periods since 1975 have included MAJOR declines in the value of the US dollar, between 1985-1990 and between 2001 and now....

nice try though....

Likewise nice try exrepub but no cigar. You are relying on foreign exchange rates used for currency trading and these are manipulated/controlled by central banks. In other words comparing apples to oranges. "Purchasing" power in the US is measured by the CPI and your assertion of a 50% increase in the last 7.5 years is specious. Any economist knows that inflation is caused by central banks increasing the money supply (M3) and the Federal Reserve discontinued publishing that data in 2006. Very convenient, but NOT a partisan issue as Both major parties are involved in the government theft called inflation.

The increase in the CPI from 2001 to 2007 (most recent available data) is 17%. Quite alarming but far from your alleged 50%.

the US dollar has been devalued worldwide and buying power has been decreased.....we need more of the same!!!!

Thanks for your candor.

candor? its called sarcasm, which is often hard to spot.....

Sarcasm is a common leftist/progressive response to reality; third only to the straw man and non sequitur.

calling people leftists is a common response when you cant make an argument.....im a terrorist too, right? and non patriotic? lol lol lol

oh yeah, i forgot, im probably gay too....

this is why i will stay registered as a republican, but will not vote for any this year....the hate is too much to take anymore...

exrepub: "calling people leftists..."
If it quacks like a duck, swims and flies like a duck. it is most likely in fact a duck.

A better example of the straw man gambit does not exist.

name one way in which im a leftist.....your narrow mind labels without data....

if you think im a leftist because i voted for George Bush, thats your problem. i THOUGHT that he was a fiscal conservative when he got my vote....

exrepub: "name one way in which im a leftist....."
OK. I'll give you 2: The following are 2 of your statements of leftist talking points under the tag of "ExRepublican".
1) "our country doesnt produce, it consumes."
Why not check the figures of GDP of nations of the world? It takes only a few seconds to learn that the US leads the world.
2) "...a guy who cut the value of the dollar IN HALF in less than 8 years(GWB),..."
This leftist assertion was revealed to be bogus in my previous comment.
As you post anonymously, we have no way of knowing the other leftist/progressive nonsense you have posted on these blogs under other tags.

noting that the american economy is faltering makes one a leftist? again, your simple mindedness leaves me speechless.

it doesnt take an economist to see that a falling dollar paired with increased inflation is bad for america. but you obviously care more about labeling people than you do about the country.

if im a leftist and registered republican, does that make GWB one too?

At 9:59 AM, Blogger ΛΕΟΝΙΔΑΣ said...

Your "registration" is not the issue. It is the vacuous regurgitation of nonsensical leftist sound bites that reveals your position on the political spectrum.

Agence France-Presse August 29, 2008 06:18am: "US gross domestic product (GDP) growth accelerated to a 3.3 percent annualised pace in the second quarter, up from an earlier estimate of 1.9 percent and a strong rebound from the 0.9 per cent increase in the first quarter."

This is obviously evidence that GWB has AGAIN trashed America! Better luck next quarter.

pogo,
i saw that too...i found it ironic that every report called it a "suprise"!!! lets hope it goes higher next quarter....
