Gay Weddings In The News

Just about every newspaper and web site I've read the past week seems to have had at least one story covering the same- sex marriages that resumed after the recent Supreme Court decision.

I realize it's probably not a conspiracy. It is news and I can't blame the news media for running with a story. I don't think it's of benefit to the LGBT community to publicize this.

Keep in mind I opposed Prop. 8 and am glad the Supreme Court ruled the way it did, especially considering it could have come out worse. I don't think it's a good idea to rub this in the noses of those who remain bitter over the outcome and, reading comments to some of the news stories, many are very bitter.

There are those still strongly opposed to anything homosexual. They will see this as having it being rubbed in their faces and that will stiffen their resolve to keep fighting. If the marriages that have taken place were done more discretely, those opposed to gay marriage might have been more able to ignore them and hopefully move on.

I don't think public opinion is changed by being quiet and hiding.

To a great extent that's true. We never would have gotten to this point without action dating all the way back to the Stonewall(?) riots.

Still, there's a time to take your winnings quietly and not make a fuss. Don't be a poor winner, as the saying goes. In this case it serves no purpose but to galvanize the opposition.

I might add, as an example, the quote Gavin Newsom made as Mayor of San Francisco: "It's coming, whether you like it or not", in referring to same- sex marriage.

That ended up being used by supporters of Prop 8 and might well have encouraged more fanatical and widespread support.

"Henchman Of Justice" says,

As far as rubbing noses of people who are still bitter - that is ironic because religiously, the very same bitter people who supposedly go to church and teach themselves not to "rub noses" thus, in fact, do rub noses, and did, in fact rub noses prior to and leading-up to the latest decision.

HOJ says,

RUB IT ALL AWAY, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA to the traditonal losers who opened their flapjacks and spewed laundry detergent in their attempts to make the world be cleansed to their moral beliefs and "un-standards".

Religious Zealots are gonna have a very bad century the remaining 86+ years.

True equality will not exist until there are ZERO benefits at the expense of other tax payers for merely being married. One example: Why should one spouse receive the others' SS benefits if higher than their own when the other dies?

This is no longer an Ozzie and Harriet world. You should only be entitled to those benefits YOU earn, period. There should be no government rewards, benefits, tax breaks, etc., nor should there be any penalties, for either being married or for having children.

As far as gay or heterosexual marriage, the term marriage should be eliminated from a civil perspective, and replaced with a Relationship Contract. You should be able to contract with any other human being(s)you wish, and that contract should allow the parties to agree to any activity or arrangement they wish - as long as that activity does not involve criminal conduct. No sexual activity between two or more adults in private should be criminal.

The government's sole interest in familial or sexual relationships between consenting adults should be to insure that any children that are a result of that relationship - through birth or adoption - are taken care of properly.
