L.A.'s Fast Food Effort Flops

Calwatchdog looks at a Los Angeles ordinance meant to help curb obesity. Back in 2008 the city council voted unanimously to freeze the opening of fast food franchises- the idea being the less fast food, the less obesity.

It didn't work. In fact, it seems obesity rose even more in the areas subject to the ordinance:

In fact, obesity rates in the area had grown at a faster clip than elsewhere in the city,” the Atlantic noted. “As NBC News reported, the percentage of people in South Los Angeles who were overweight or obese in 2007 was 63 percent. By 2011, that figure was 75 percent.

Health activists weren't bothered with the results. They just feel more needs to be done;  “They say the obesity epidemic is complex, and that solving it will require more than a ban on new fast food restaurants.

I can imagine what they mean by that. You can bet those anti- fatness efforts will be showing up here in the not so distant future. They never sleep.

Which isn't to say there isn't a problem with obesity, here or elsewhere. From my own estimate, I'd say 75% of guys, young and old, are overweight. That's just from watching people around town. Getting out and exercising more is the place to start, along with watching what you eat.

I agree, 65+ percent of American's appear to be overweight. It's affecting all of our pocketbooks, atleast those that don't have subsidized health care.

If you're referring medical expenses, why would those that have subsidized health care not be contributing to increasing health care costs?

Good question.

I guess you didn't read about the study that showed the dramatic increase in health and life expectancy in New York during Mayor Bloomberg's term in office?

Check it out! A 2+ year increase in life expectancy amongst other things.

Obesity rates can decrease if one prepared and cooked their own meals at home rather than eating in restaurants, fast food or otherwise.

Along with some regular exercise, I have found that weight control requires two simple steps: 1) eat meals until you are not hungry, not until you are full, and 2) a gentle, but steady, push away from the table.

That's obviously a junk science study based on ideology rather than facts. His anti- smoking and soft drink bans weren't even in existence long enough to perform a study. Heck, his soft drink ban probably didn't even last a year before it the courts shut it down.

'Check it out! A 2+ year increase in life expectancy amongst other things. "

Again, that's total bs. Not enough time to come to anything close to that conclusion. If that were even half way valid, any number of the major media would be trumpeting it, although they'd be wrong.

It's just a tax setup. The more depressed, unemployed, hectic, lives get, the more cherished vices become. Simple math.
As for the smoking which used to be the main vice of choice to ward off all of the above, including obesity, they're now saying that because smokers cost more due to living as long as non smokers. Truth be told, the oldest people recorded were smokers. (117, 126, 109, etc).
Their vice kept them sane, thin, & content, until the taxes & blame & shame propagated.
Some countries adore the obese, because the obese are healthier. Healthy is in all makes & models until the tax hores stress the health right out of you.
