Jobs Vs. Services

This story in the Santa Rosa Press- Democrat brought out a difference in perspectives. The gist of the story is that Sonoma County is considering cutting 500 county employees. The writer's emphasis seems to be that government services will suffer. The first thing that came to my mind was it's 500 people losing their jobs.

Are you saying the services should continue to be provided by the county so that people can remain employed by the government?

From the article: "'This is a year to take a look seriously at what services we're going to continue to deliver,' she said about the downsizing. 'I think this could set the new baseline for the county.'"

This should be something that is constantly evaluated - even when tax revenue isn't tight compared to expenses.

A tricky thing is the assumption that all programs will continue for an eternity if they are provided by the government. It seems that an expectation and dependency is created when government provides any service. I think that mindset gets worse when we begin talking about State and Federal programs.

No. I'm just commenting on the different way people see things.

Double Dip Recession, here it comes... It isn't just Sonoma County. It isn't just local government. It isn't just government. My prediction is that this will become readily apparent by about September 2011. Hold on to your hats.
