The Lisbon Earthquake of 1755

I'd never heard of this earthquake long ago that destroyed Lisbon, which used to be one of the world's biggest and wealthiest cities. The earthquake was believed to be around a 9.2 (yikes!).

That was about the worst scenario I've ever read, no words to describe that horror!

Funny coincidence! I was just reading how pipe tobacco smokers were the only ones who didn't suffer from the plagues. They even went so far to mandate pipe smoking for the children.
Maybe it's a sign I should buy some pipe tobacco & a pipe.

My stars! 9.2? (I wish I could reread post while typing). I haven't heard of that one before either. Those poor people!
