Typical Third Party Election?

The Richmond Times- Dispatch did a good job of presenting the frustration of running for office as something other than a democrat or republican. Voters aren't happy with the major party choices for Governor of Virginia, yet the media ignores the third candidate. It happens all the time.

"It also quoted Leslie Campbell, a 53-year-old homemaker: 'I wish I had more than two candidates,' she said. 'I wish there was a third choice.' The article doesn’t mention [Libertarian Party candidate] Sarvis once."

Thanks to J.D. Tuccille for the heads up.

Yes, Fred. They are ignored because 3rd party's are rediculous in our system. I'm not against 3rd parties, don't get me wrong. But until we have a parlimentary system they are not going to work. Name the last time they worked. You can mention Jesse Ventura but I would and have argued that is an example of how they don't work. Bernie Sander's is making it work, but he is in the legislature, not an exectutive. (and he caucuses with the Democrats) The reason they are ignored - not by the media, but by most people is because most people are smart. They realize if you do vote for a Green say, you are in effect giving the Republican another vote. And as Florida 2000 proved, that is not an option.

that is just herd mentality. third party candidates are becoming more common and will soon be the real option to the continual war party candidates we get.

Well, I just call that the simple way many look at politics: Red vs. Blue, us vs. them, and so on.

They realize if you do vote for a Green say, you are in effect giving the Republican another vote.

Wasted Vote Syndrome assumes that I would vote for either the Republican or Democrat if I had no other choice. That would be wrong.

A two party system is like having a choice of nothing but Pepsi or coke two different names but they taste pritty much the same. Of course one really has dangerous levels of carcinogens in its die and the other uses fetal cells in its flavoring that's almost as fucked up as our government ;-)
