Eureka's Camping Project Fails

I was disappointed to hear of Eureka's legal campgrounds for the homeless shut down. I'd thought maybe we'd found a solution, abeit a temporary one.

Then again, I wrote here earlier on that this would probably be the mess it turned out to be with the campgrounds becoming  a center for crime and requiring more and more city resources.

I'm wondering if we shouldn't take another look at the South Jetty? You'll recall it turned into a mess when the homeless moved there to establish  a camp years ago. It likely would be again, but at least it would be a mess there and not in town.

One problem I see with the South Jetty is it would likely require its own resident deputy since the problems at the Eureka campgrounds would re- establish themselves there.

My biggest worry, as I wrote of here and elsewhere, was the idea of housing the homeless in local homes already available for rent. Then we'd have all those problems in homes right next door to us. Glad to see that idea withered on the vine. Then again, this isn't over yet.

I, too, am both disappointed and unsurprised. It was nice having an idea where the masses would...amass even if it was to avoid the area. Sorry but try being a woman alone, walking the waterfront and encountering a gauntlet hanging both at the gate and across along the curb as you pass the salvage lot by the Marina. So many programs available but these are the people who want none of it if it involves rules or standards. I don't like the idea of giving them the South Spit as it will make THAT area inaccessible by those of us who like to go there. Plus they'll have to get back to town to access the services they DO want. They claim to want to be "left alone" as long as that includes being given handouts and free stuff they will use and leave as refuse on the streets and floating in the Bay. The help we have offered is plenty. It's time this group move on.

most of the south jetty is either part of humboldt bay wildlife refuge or eel river wildlife area and neither allow camping on their properties . only spot not in either is the ocean side about 50 feet up from the water . and one reason they got chased out of there years ago was hunter harassment , they didnt like hunters shooting .
