More Rudeness?
Maybe not. Maybe it's just annoying.
Former Mayor of Fortuna, Odell Shelton, calls a meeting in Fortuna but won't say what it's about. Well, ok, he did say it has something to do with the City Manager, but I guess that's it.
For some reason this reminds me of those commercials the pharmaceutical companies were running a while back. The ones where they'd mention the name of some drug along with some senseless video without ever saying what medical condition the drugs were supposed to be used for.
Then at the end of the commercial they'd close with, "Ask your doctor if Diolixin is right for you.", even though you have no idea what the drugs were for.
That almost sounds like the way they're advertising this meeting. Perhaps they're hoping curiousity might get more people to attend?
Erik, over at his blog, wonders how many people will be showing up for Ron Kuhnel's fund raising party. I'm wondering how many people will show up for Shelton's meeting?

Does this mean you live inFortuna?
The city council, of which Mr.Shelton was a part of at time, approved a fourteen million dollar wastewater treatment plant expansion. At the same time, they also approved several million dollars in water system repairs.
In order to pay for these improvements,
a bond issuance was also approved by the council, again, with Mr.Shelton voting in favor.
The city hired an outside engineering firm to prepare a rate study, as a condition of the bond issuance. Rates did go up, as the bonds need to be paid by the ratepayers.
Carol Anne, the water rates didnt increase, at least I dont believe they did. The sewer rates did increase, and the way they are calculated also changed as per the consultants hired by the city to do the rate study.
Odell Shelton owns a car wash business, doesn't he? They use a lot of water and maybe that's his gripe about the rate increase.
Carol Ann,
What are your feelings regarding Walmart as it pertains to Fortuna?
An overwhelming majority of Fortunans want some type of big box store, be it a target, walmart or fred meyer.
Frankly, as a Fortunan we want Wal-Mart, Home Depot and anything else that will get us choice and goods not offered until we drive and wast gas in Crescent City and Ukiah. Carol Ann, there you go again...the sky is falling, the sky is falling.
Well, Odell Shelton had his big meeting last night, and much to his surprise, many stalwarts of the community showed up and wanted to know what his "tough questions" were.
Mr.Shelton stood in the back, and refused to answer, saying "this is the wrong crowd" - if the news is reported accurately, it will show that a bully was exposed.
I do feel badly for Sylvia Jutila, a very nice lady who leads the anti walmart group, Fortuna First. She had NO IDEA that this was going to happen, and at first was thrilled that so many people were there to hear her anti walmart presentation.
She was soon disabused of the notion she had an adoring crowd, as many got up, mostly senior citizens, and said that "WE WANT A WALMART".
As I said, Sylvia is a very nice lady, and shouldnt have had to go through that, but Odell Shelton kind of hung her out to dry, when he say many community pillars there to call him on the mud and misinformation he has been spreading.
Yes, Carol Ann, you have your free speech; this is a great country - but will you support the will of the majority of citizens of fortuna who, as studies have shown, WANT a big box store?
Carol Ann - butt out of fortuna until you move back.
but will you at least answer the question posed by 6:11?
The polling being conducted by the City of Fortuna, during multiple community workshops and surveys conducted at local events such as autorama and farmers markets show that people want a big box. This was reported in the humboldt beacon and I believe, both the times-standard and eureka reporter.
I still am curious though, Carol Ann, if this is true, that an overwhelming majority of fortunans want a big box, ala walmart/fred meyer, will you support the will of the majority of citizens?
Carol Ann, when asked specifically:
" if this is true, that an overwhelming majority of fortunans want a big box, ala walmart/fred meyer, will you support the will of the majority of citizens?"
responds:
"I'm not ready to make that decision, thank you"
This is priceless. You cant make this up and be any funnier. This coming from a CREG supporter who trots out the tired "61% were against walmart in eureka in 1999" line when fighting a completely different project seven years later, yet can not commit herself to supporting the will of the people down in Fortuna.
Thats because she doesn't feel she needs to be consistent or democratic. Remember, Carol Ann and Greg believe that they know whats best for the rest of us and that they can interfere in the political decisions which they have absolutely no business interfering in. You know if they lived in Fortuna, I would say go for it, but they don't and want to tell others how to live their lives. So, the might "Butt Out" to both of them...move to Fortuna and then you get the right to "butt in". Until you do, you are nothing but close minded, busy body prigs.
Carol, dear - you keep bringing out the worst in anonymous. Anonymous, please be kind. We spend a lot of money in both Fortuna and Eureka, so we feel we have a stake in each community. More to the point, we have a stake in Humboldt County.
But "close minded, busy body prigs?" That's a good work-pick, considering your point of view.
Greg - you think just because you go to Safeway and buy groceries, you should be able to interfere in Fortuna's politics? I guess you do as you do the same in Eureka.
Did you hear Father Thomas' community comment on Thursday. Evidently he agrees with my point of view as he complimented everyone in the county outside of Eureka for advising him how to vote in the Eureka race and said that he voted opposite to what the outsiders wanted him to vote.
Now thats a crackup!
8:06, your Republican skirts are showing. I never said I wanted to interfere with Fortuna's politics under any circumstances. My local political representative is Jimmy Smith, though I do live in the Fortuna High School District. Eureka's still my home town and my opinion is just my opinion. If I have this right, you say you determined your vote by doing the opposite of someone else? I guess that's a good quick way to make a decision.
Here's the thing, though Greg (and Carol)...and no, I'm not 8:06...
You both are both inconsistent, in several different areas.
First, you both claim to be attacked, even when trying to initiate a reasoned dialogue, yet you are both quick to lable those who disagree with you as "showing their republican skirts" , "neocon", "Rovian" or whatever, so as to depersonalize and diminish. Yet when someone (not myself) calls you smug, self-righteous or something else along those lines, you are soooo quick to trot out the tired "stop picking on my wife" or "I'm being attacked" lines. BTW, how are one's "republican skirts" reveal themselves in 8:06's comment?? He/She said absolutely nothing to indicate which side of the political spectrum he/she resides on; again, you depersonalize with namecalling.
Secondly, with comments along the lines of "the only real poll will be on tuesday" you both display your inconsistency in this way: if (and it's a pretty big if, imo) The incumbent councilpersons and Bass win, I highly doubt you and Carol will stop your efforts at derailing the marina center, and you have both admitted basically as much. If however, the anti-marina slate wins, you will both scream from the rooftops that its over, that the people have spoken.
This is sooooo inconsistent, especially in light of the Fortuna situation mentioned above. One of the big reasons Odell Shelton is no longer on the Fortuna City Council is that he was totally against a big box development in Fortuna, and in fact the three victors in the April election were widely viewed as the pro big box candidates. Furthermore, as was noted in prior posts, the people of Fortuna are overwhelmingly in favor of a big box development. As part of the general plan update the city is going through, surveys and community meetings have borne this out.
Carol, when repeatedly asked about this, finally, responds that she is "not ready to make that decision" - do you see the inconsistency?
Finally, with regards to the various polls pertaining to the proposed balloon track/t development, Greg derides the HBC poll as a "push poll" yet doesnt admit that his own CREG poll was the same kind of push poll; furthermore, the at least the HBC released the full poll and their questions, while Greg, after further querying finally admitted that in fact CREG did not release the full poll, nor all the questions asked (in fact they hardly released any of the questions or results).
In past posts, when I have called greg on this, particularly the whole consistency issue, he's accused me of "rovian" tactics. LOL, Greg, I'm a fellow dem, but like Richard Marks, I am tired of the extremists who have taken over my party locally.
