Term Limits

I might have said here earlier I'm ambivalent about term limits for elected officials. They work both ways: They can get rid of politicians you like, and ones you don't like- one that comes to mind being Wes Chesbro.

Oh, I'm sure Chesbro might have done one or two things in his life deserving of praise from a libertarian perspective, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. I'll be glad to see him go.

Things is, the odds are his replacement will be just as bad as he was, so no big loss for the Left, or gain for the Right. Everything remains the same.

I believe I voted for term limits whenever it was we voted for them years ago. I don't know if I'd vote for them again, or not.

Only if we had term limits on the Supes and Arcata.

Amen 7:30 AM.

For all intents and purposes Wes Chsbro has never had a real job, just politics.

Chirs Kerrigan, of Eureka City Council fame, aspires to be the same (only he has governor or higher as his goal).

It's just the same group over and over. And once they get in they (them and associates) don't want to give up that power. They donate money to each other (out of their poitical coffers), they pay each other for advice/assistance. It seems like such a big scam. Just look at the donations lists!

Wes has mellowed over time. He showed great courage during his years on the county board of supervisors, understanding as he did that he was ahead of his time on many issues. I appreciated his comment the other night at the Democrat of the Year Dinner, where he was one of the honorees: "When I get back to Humboldt County, I kiss the ground". Wes' heart is in the right place.

Term limits are just a way for big business to maintain their tight control over our elected officials. Don't kid yourself on the issue, even if you dislike certain long-serving elected officials.

Term limits have been a complete failure in California. Lobbyists wield twice as much power than before because fresh faces need all the money they can get, while having no experience or understanding about lobbyists and their motives.

Wes has never held a real job, has he? He needs to get off the dole! And why would he want to go from the senate to the assembly seat? Just to suck more money from government? Just vote for anyone but! Pat Wiggins is taking his place? Please there will be nothing done for another 8 years!

I don't know I'd go that far. One thing is for sure, as one state assemblyman has pointed out: The legislature has lost a lot of institutional memory, which can cause it's share of problems.

Some might consider that a good thing.

I've gone ahead and deleted some comments related to sexual shennanigans. I thing most of us know what that will end up deteriorating into.

Thanks, Fred.

After last night's debate on KEET, I guess I am still glad there are term limits, though I agree with CPR that elections are the only term limits we should need.

"When I get back to Humboldt County, I kiss the ground"... for those boobs that repeat sending me to Sacramento for all those perks and the opportunity to just further the "progressive" agenda and not have to do any honest work.

6:53 - right on. I was at the dem of the year dinner, heard Wes again and agree with 6:53. Wes needs to get a real job and quit bullsh--ting the public.

Wes worked for many years for a company in Arcata making down sleeping bags and jackets. I forget the name of the company. When I was a teenager in South Pasadena I had a paper route with the Star News with about 70 papers to deliver. Wes had the LA Times, about 500 papers. He started the recycling center in Arcata, where Adventure's Edge is now. I would occasionally help him move cardboard boxes to the old train depot where he would load them onto a flatcar. Here is what really strikes me about Wes. I've known him for many years, we've enjoyed adventures together, and I've never known him to get flustered or angry. He's the only guy that I know that I can say this about. His thinking process is always clear as a bell, never colored by frustration or anger.

Only folks, completely oblivious to real information about WC could possibly accuse him of not having a real job or getting anything done. You blog all day... maybe try some other way of gathering information about a gentleman you obviously just read about in the newspaper. Critical bloggers generally have no credible information. Have you ever actually met him? Talked to him about anything at all? Because if you had... oh, forget it.
