The New, Improved, Eureka?
A link on the Lost Coast Outpost took me to th LoCo's Facebook page where the first thing I saw was, "Imagine Eureka with new hotels! New stores! How about museums? Or maybe a ferris wheel?". I had to comment to that one that I can't think of one " new' thing in Eureka that has made it a better place. It was a better place when I first moved here in the mid 70s. The Eureka Mall back then seemed a lot more fun with its atrium. Now it's just a bunch of stores, although Winco is probably an improvement over Sears that stood in the same place back then.
I guess the Bayshore Mall is considered an improvement by some. I never go down there. Then there was Food Mart in Henderson Center which closed only to be replaced with that crappy little Rite Aid. The old Payless Drugs was a much better store, although we never had Payless in Henderson Center if memory serves me correct.
As far as I"m concerned, the new, improved Eureka is anything but.
Can anyone come up with some new things that made Eureka better? There must be at least one.

The new transfer center is nice. And it doesnt stink like a bleach factory on cold foggy days anymore. That new trail down by the slough is nice. Target was an improvement in my opinion. The madaket reopening was a big improvement. The old town pier could have been nice if they had continued to develop it. The Eureka Inn reopening has been an improvement.
Costco improved Eureka. Gas prices throughout the city dropped 25 cents the day Costco opened its gas station, and the prevailing price throughout the city was still 25 cents higher than Costco. That's a window into how overpriced our gas was, and how much Costco is helping keep our costs down -- whether you have a Costco membership or not.
For reference, gasbuddy.com shows today's Costco price as $2.69 and the rest of the city as $2.95 to $2.99, with the majority of stations at $2.99. Costco is 25 to 30 cents cheaper for gas. That's an improvement for anyone who drives a car.

Renner is your next best bet at $2.74, but the sign-up process for membership is a bit more murky. Whereas, if I'm wondering about Costco, I can just walk into the warehouse and ask someone. If I don't want a Costco membership, I can have a friend buy me a Costco cash card and buy gas that way.
The Eureka Boardwalk is an improvement for watching the Kinetic Sculpture Race. It's a tad pricey to build it just to enjoy one day out of the year, but there you go.

Eureka boardwalk was pleasant, before it reeked of discrimination & prejudism against those who take pleasure in tobacco while reminiscing about the good old days when America was free.
The link is a Delphi technique used for gathering votes for preconceived, pre planned, UN stack & pack communities. NOTA is never an option. These "fun" planning schemes are in every community now, promoted by the COG (council of governments) that does the footwork for agenda 21. Go to any town USA and find similar plans, while the homeless veterans & ex-employers are kicked from tent to tent.
Good memories, Fred! I loved the old mall, especially during Christmas shopping, but at any time of the year. Now I'm an online shopper, if that. I usually just send a list with the youngsters who don't mind the new & improved, but only because they never witnessed the old & perfect.
Montgomery Ward was like K-Mart is today... looking like it's on its last legs. The place was pretty dumpy and sad looking by the time it closed. I tried to buy a sofa there. After waiting 3 months for them to have a big enough order to bring a truckload of sofas to Eureka, I gave up and canceled my order.
I did too, but MW had been gone for years and the place sat vacant.
I enjoy not having an asthma attack on the Boardwalk. Somehow, I'm oppressive for expecting you to do your nasty habit someplace else before you visit a public venue. There are two labels for that. "Sense of entitlement" and "victim syndrome." You're not significantly impacted by catering to your addiction someplace else, like inside your car before you visit the Boardwalk. But you're essentially telling me I shouldn't be in public at all. Huh. Maybe one day you'll get the totalitarian regime you seem to want.
12:26, you are free to go elsewhere, but if you choose to follow the wisps of non protein smoke then don't force your stupidity & grievances upon others.
